I'm looking for a gunsmith in the north Idaho, Spokane Washington area to rebarrel a Remington 700 in 338 Edge. I have already contacted Shawn at Defensive Edge but he is only doing complete builds. Does anyone have any recommendations? I talked to a few gunsmiths in this area but none of them have had any experience with an Edge. I would be willing to use somebody out of the area too.

Thanks

I feel your pain, Seems as though the gunsmiths are chasing the big bucks and dont have the time for the petty projects that have been paying there bills for years prior to the "Full Custom Craze".

I don't think they're not willing to do petty jobs anymore, but the demand for their complete work has just become so great that it's all they have time for. If their workload slows up they'll go back to doing rebarrel jobs.

While it might suck for us as the consumer when we want to have them do "small" work for us, it makes no business sense for them not to do small jobs when they are already backlogged with complete builds.

Try Shawn Thomason @ 208-924-5335 he is a one guy shop but been doing it for a long time. Seems to be reasonable.

Something doesn't sound right about this. Did you only want Defensive Edge to do a rebarrel without trueing the action or something??? I know they typically won't do a rebarrel unless they can true/square/blueprint the action and they only build guns on Rem. 700 and custom actions. There must be more to this story.....

I dropped off my Rem. LTR .223 early last fall and had them blueprint the action and rebarrel it to a .223ai and it was done before Christmas. It turned out pretty **** good too. With fireforming loads it shot a .112 group which is just one big ragged hole.

No, there's nothing more to it than that. I just told him that I had a Remington 700 action that I wanted trued up and a barrel chambered to 338 edge, and that I would take care of the stock and bedding, trigger ect. He just said that he is only doing complete builds. I was kind of bummed since I live in the same town but unfortunatly I'm also on a budget, otherwise I would have him do it in a heartbeat. I did NOT post the comment about Shawn to disrespect him in any way, shape, or form. I simply stated that because I had done a search for gunsmiths in this area and Shawns name always came up, and rightfully so. I just figured it would save everyone the trouble of posting his name. Thats it.

I just picked up an action that had already been trued by Kevin at Montour County Rifles and he said that he would be more than happy to take care of the rest. So it all worked out in the end.

Due to the exact same circumstance, I shipped mine to Hart barrels. That's the bbl Shawn would have used anyway. Hart should have received mine yesterday. I'm quoted 8-9 months and that's ok with me.

You certainly won't go wrong with Kevin either. Kevin is an excellent machinist/gunsmith and one of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure of talking to. Kevin is doing a 6-06ai for my dad right now in fact.

Kevin Cram w/MCR is definately top notch!!!!

I've heard the same thing about Kevin. I'm sure that I'll be happy with him. He's been great to deal with so far.

Just got my reamer for my Edge on friday, only took about 8 months to get.I've got a friend who has built many rifles doing the work for me.Hoping to have it done next week.

Lawton 7000 action
30" McGowen Sendaro contour barrel
