Im looking for a new scope for my new practice rifle which is a rem 700 5r milspec 308.. I have been looking at leupold vxiii, sightron siii, and vortex viper pst. I really like the mk4 with the tmr, but wondering if its worth the extra cash?

I think all three are great scopes. I have all but the sightronIII. For the money I do not think you can beat the viper pst. Just my two cents.
I hear the least neg about the sightron siii. I would think the vxiii would be great with a quick trip to the custom shop for new turrets but the pst has great features with ok reviews.. This rifle is just used for targets and will prob never be used for hunting. I do believe a sfp would be best for this, but any opinions will help.

NO. Get the PST it has everything you will want. The others have to have things added to them. I have a 6-24x50 PST FFP MOA / MOA. I have had zero issues and have only read a "so so" reviews from one person that supposedly tests scopes, but only looked through one indoors at Shot Show and was able to give scientific tests of the scopes he looked through. He has no credibility as far as I am concerned. IMHO

Since your looking for opinions the Sightron SIII is a poor mans Nightforce, there 2moa reticle is almost identical to the Nightforce NP-R2 and glass quality compared to nightforce I give it a 9.5 out 10, superior to Leupold and Vortex, the only thing I like about the new leupolds is the available Horus crosshairs.
Is the ffp a good choice for long distance targets? I really like all the features of the scope im just worried about glass quality.

They will handle anything from my 22-250AI to my hybrid throated 338edge all day any day and I think they are proof tested to 12,000G's or about 3x the recoil of a 50 Browning for several thousand rounds. A lot of fellow IBS 1k shooters have started putting the 10-50x60 SIII on there new rigs instead of the 12-42x56 NF. As far as having a first or some say front focal plane is that it does not change the crosshair dots, hash marks, etc.. as the magnification changes other than that, it isn't really necessary.

Imo the quality of leupold has been going down, they are living off of the name these days, 25 years ago they were the best but now I put them on par with Nikon and weaver.

I really doubt you would be disapointed in the glass in a PST, or any Viper for that matter. I think it is well above par for the price. The PST comes in both FFP and SFP as well as MOA or Mils. I have one coming now in MOA / MOA / SFP. That is my preference for long range shooting.

Here is the 1,000 yd. target that was the second time I shot at paper at 1,000 yds. The glass is every bit as good as the $1800 Leupold. Mine is a PST FFP MOA / MOA 6-24x50mm.
The target has three 5 shot groups with the group size and scores in the lower right hand corner. I was shooting my hunting rifle chambered in 6mm Norma BR. with Berger 105 gr. VLDs.

Why beat around the bush like I did for a long time. Just go ahead and look into a Nightforce NXSwith the NP-R1 reticle. Once you look into it you won't look back. Now I look into four of them.
