remington ultramag extractor issues

I have a Remington 700 that was originally a 7mm RUM which I used the action for a 338 edge build. The extractor sometimes slips off and leaves the empty in the chamber. If I cycle the bolt a few more times it will eventually catch and pull out the case. There is no pattern. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The bolt lift is always easy and my velocities are in line with what everyone else reports they are getting so I know excessive pressure is not the issue. My question is should I just replace it with a new factory extractor or have a smith install a Sako type extractor? I don't want to waste time and money if the factory extractor will not permanently fix this issue, but it will be much cheaper than the Sako.

M-16 extractors are the way to go.They usually cost about $150.00 installed.You can buy a new bolt from PTG with an M-16 extractor,but the bolt handle must be attached.SSG gunsmithing tig welds the handles and does a great job.The action needs to be sent with the bolt and handle in order to time things correctly. The total cost for the new bolt is comparable to having an M-16 or Sako extractor installed in your existing bolt.PTG has a choice of bolt handles available for the same price. I have done this both ways and they work the same.IMO the M-16 extractor is far superior to the Remington extractor.

I had the same thing on an ultra mag years ago and I agree M-16 extractor is the way to go

I agree with everything posted so far, I have 2 Sako extractors, 1 factory remmy & 1 M-16 style. The M-16 IMHO is far, far superior to the Sako especially in the design & attachment.

Ultraedge, PTG is now offering 1 piece bolt assemblies... no more attaching handles...

Guys, I am experiencing the same problem with an early 700 action/bolt with RWS brass. One in 50 will stick a bit and will not extract. A slight bump with the cleaning rod will push it out. This is not an over pressure load. I was getting ready to go with the Sako extractor but read this thread. So does the M-16 get a better hold on the case? I want the one with the most bite on the case rim as some of the RWS brass is not real consistant here in my opinion.

Jeff, the M-16 has an actual pin going through the body of the bolt and into the center of the extractor to act as a pivot point, its a very beefy set up compared to the sako style. as for bit on the Rim I am am not positive, I have both on remington bolts though I will go take a pic and post them so you can see for yourself. and I will look at which one looks to take the biggest bite. I think the M-16 is significantly bigger bite if I am picturing it in my head right.

Broz, I can't believe i'm actually able to offer YOU advice!

My experience with the Sako (bad) is with my Lazzeroni Patriot. It was a failure to eject, extraction was perfect but the spent case would usually just fall back into the action as if it hit the wall of the ejection port. So, 'smith A decides to modify the ejection port thinking the case mouth was contacting the front of the port (after I told him it didn't) & as you can imagine it didn't help. I finally get hooked up with my current 'smith who thinks maybe the plunger isn't kicking the brass enough (Lazz SA brass very heavy) to throw it clear of the ejection port. After modifying the plunger some, it still doesn't run 100%, so back in it goes... Chad (Dixon) finally discovers the extractor in design is causing a binding action on the rim of the case, after putting a small chamfer on the ends of the extractor, we now have 100% function, as we should.

Now, lets talk installation. I'm sure you've seen the install video posted here, myself being a safety professional by trade, I get somewhat anal when the "what if's" come into play. When installed, there is NOTHING holding the Sako extractor in place other than friction... NOTHING. In the very small chance of a catastrophic case rupture, that bad boy is free to go pretty much anywhere it wants. With my luck, that would be straight down the lug raceway into my face...

The M-16 extractors are cross pinned into place, it isn't much, but it is 100% more than the Sako has.

Can it happen? Yup, already has... Will it happen? probably not, but I'm not a particularly good gambler.

Thanks guys, I guess I have been lucky before. I have never had an issue. I should have known as my current smith has asked me if I want the mod when we did the build. This is the earliest 700 action I have ever used, maybe some of them were worst than others but it does not get a very good hold on the case. Plus as I said I feel the RWS brass is a little shy in rim here to on some cases.

Changing bolts will likely change your headspace. It is possible your factory extractor is bent, work hardened, etc, and a new one will give reliable service. A properly installed m16 would be a great upgrade.

The Howa has an m16 type.

Are the m16 placed above the lug or has anyone tried the install method of putting the m16 extractor inside the lug to get the .3 oclock hold on the case and if anyone has how did they do it . I have heard of issues with placing above the lug having the case ejecting to far up and contacting the scope anyone seen these issue and how to keep from happening
