Anybody use a ar-15 for lang range varmint hunting? I was thinking about building one in 223 WSSM or 243 WSSM. I was leaning toward the 243 because i could use on deer also.

Stay away from any of the WSSMs they are barrel burners. That's why all factory gun barrels are chrome plated. How far do you plan to shoot? I had a Bushmaster DCM that I used in High Power competition that would put 10 shots in less than 1/2" at 100 yds. I have also seen better shots than me shoot less then 6" groups at 600 yds. with open sights.

If they can be made to feed in an AR the 6mm Norma BR. or one of its hi-breds would be a much better choice than the WSSMs.

The WSSMs require a AR10. The AR 15 will not handle the larger cases .

If you are going to buy a AR look at both the AR10 and the AR15. For longer ranges on
game the AR10 (Remington has one called an R25). They make it in a 243,7/08 and 308.

The AR10,R25 would be better for deer and down.

The AR 15 comes in many calibers that are suitable for varmints and a few that I would use
on deer.

I prefer the 7/08 for all round use on varmints to deer at 500+ yards because of bullet weight,
selection and ballistics.

I had a 223 wssm in Ar-15 and couldn't get the accuracy, I think you need to really to do a lot of brass prep, Neck turning in particular, the wssms are on the AR-15 format just have differnt bolt, I would look into the 22-250 out of Olympic maybe, do some research and see how people like it. There are a lot of different calibers out there now in the 6mm

Check out the 6mmAR and 6mmAR Turbo. They are available from Robert Whitley, 6mm AR website. I have a 6mmAR on an AR15 platform. I have been able to achieve consistent .25MOA groups at 300+yards/ The round is only 100 FPS lower in velocity then a 6BR. The Turbo version produces higher velocity. The platform is well tested and proven.

You can get the wssm's in AR15 platform.

If youw want one of the wssm's go with that, its your money. As far as being barrel burner, its all in how you take care of the rifle. Don't over heat it. Barrels are cheap and you can replace them your self on a AR. I have a 6.5 grendal that shoots .5 MOA pretty consistant, closing on 2000 rounds.

I have a 25 wssm in a m70 Coyote, it is not a barrel burner. It is not quite as fast as my 25-06. One thing about the wssm, the brass has been harder to come by at times.

Who makes one?

I have not seen any AR15 with a magnum boltface, Just a standard bolt face (.473 ) and down.

Thanks
