Today I recieved a Vectronix Terrapin that was ordered several weeks ago. I have not had much time to play with it but had to range something. Looked through the manual and found how to set the units to YARDS. Took it out front of my office and found the furthest object I could see, A cell tower wayyyyyy out there. 2139 yards, resting on the bed of my truck. NICE very impressed.

A solid well built high end feeling and looking piece of optical goodness and very compact compared to what I asessed from pictures. it literally is a 4"x4"X1 3/4" thick piece that will easily fit in a jacket pocket. Can not wait to get up in the caprocks and stretch the legs on this thing. Just had to share my joy!

Will do Broz, here are a few I phone pics of the size.

ooooooooooooooh aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Do some ranging around a particular small object that is positioned on a slope to to get a good feel for beam sensitivity.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a LRF of some sort. With personal experience with the Leica 1200 I'm very comfortable with its ability to range back into and between trees/rocks/etc.

I suppose for actual taking of game the 1600 would be more than sufficient. However, w/a 375 AM handy one my wish to stretch things to increase things to increase confidence for game taking distances.

Mine too. Did a quick test on a couple of road signs with it mounted on a tripod. Closer sign actually overlaps further one slightly. Could get reading off of further sign without interferance of closer. 588 yds. Also got readings off cedar trees hand held at over 1800 yds. tried further but couldn't hold steady enough. Tripod mounted no problem 2007 yds. I'll see if I can get a pic of signs. Can't wait to get out and really see what it'll do. Took pic with aiming circle purposly off so you can see overlap. Closer sign 486 yds..

Trikstr,

You have a great opportunity for a nifty test, using those 3 signs.

Deer Crossing, Barber Pole and Leanington 12 mile sign all fit within the aiming ring, or at least I think that's the aiming ring.

With a nice fluid head on on the tripod you should be able to move between the three sign and get a feel for beam/detection sensitivity.

Sound pretty nerdy but I do this kind of stuff all the time.

Another is, if you can get that black cow to reposition itself in that same spot, you should be able to measure the cow, under the cow, over the cow and on the ditch bank getting separate readings.:)

Or you could if you thought about it do something much more fun, seeing as how it's Friday evening.....:D

Been under the weather today and didn't want to spend too much time outside. I will definately be testing the beam divergence when possible and how well the aiming circle actually lines up with laser. Might try using my night vision scope to see if beam is detectable. I have some extreamlly flat areas(dry lakes) available where elev. doesn't vary more than 5' for miles. Shooting range that I built and maintain has distance in excess of 2500 yds.
I also sent Vectronix in Switzerland a snail mail suggesting they also make an MOA reticle available as an option.

What do you mean does it have some type of mil reticule? I see it gives yrds or meter

Yes it does. If you look at pic you can see a line at the left edge of speed limit sign. Line spacing is 10 mils with dots half way between. Total of 80 mils horizontally and 40 mil above aiming circle.
There were some other pics in the first post by elmerdeer that show it better than mine.
