I was wondering if anyone knew why beger didnt make the 300 grain VLD hunting bullets avaliable to buy just the bullet. I see that through HSM you can buy the reloaded bullets for a 338 win mag but the bullet alone isnt on their website.

Thanks for the help!

I don't think they've actually released the true 300 VLD to the public yet. Somewhere on this site there are pictures from nearly a year ago or more of the VLD next to the Hybrid (what the are selling now) and tanget ogive design. It may be theat due to how well the more forgiving Hybrid has been in terms of seating depths from the lands, and how little difference there is in BC, that the actual VLD design might not be released.

I guess I dont know what a tactical style bullets is. I thought that they were made for punching paper not for hunting? Is there tactical 300 grain bullet suitable to hunt big game with?

We have taken several elk with the Berger .338 / 300 gr OTM also known as the Gen2's. We have experienced complet pass throughs on all animals even as close as 400 yards from my 338 LM. All were DRT. I took an antelope and a big mule deer buck with them too.

Gphil, there is a ton of information out on the hybrid otm around the web. The long and the short of it is that a lot guys have and are testing it on game with great success. fwiw, I have not yet finished my lapua build so I have no experience with them but I have researching the heck out of em online. hth

Berger 300 grain Hybrids are fantastic hunting bullets. My buddy shot a nice 6x6 bull this fall at 1480 yards. one shot dropped the bull in his tracks with a complete pass through. Unbelievable bullet in my opinion. I won't shoot anything different.

WOW! awesome shot. Congrats to your buddy. Is there a story and pics on this I missed?

Thanks
Jeff

hmmm thats interesting. I have a 338 win mag and I was wondering how they would shoot out of that. I was looking at a ballistics calculator and compared to the 225 gn hornady sst's im shooting at 2800fps. Those berger 300 gn had a 1000lb more energy at 500 yds and only dropped 10in more when I put in a muzzle velocity of 2500 fps for the bergers. do you gies think I could get 2500fps out of a 338wm with the 300 gn bullets? Im shooting a rem 700 xcr with a 26in barrel

I pushed them hard in my 24.5" barrel and got 2430fps. You might get up near 2500fps in a 26" tube. Worth a try. I have had similar thoughts but now that Berger is going to reintroduce the Gen 1 bullets with the thinner jacket I think that I will wait until I can get a fresh supply of them.
For comparison, I can get 2710fps out of a 26.5" barrel in .338RUM calibre.

I will work on getting pictures this weekend.

the story begins on October 15 2011 which is opening day in our unit. We hunt a huge basin that for some time has held little elk due to the wolf pressure. this year was the other way around. I started bugling at first light on the center ridge of the basin and had 6 different bulls bugling back. I had my wife and 9 year old son with me. My two buddies Jeremy and Kevin were on the next ridge just left of my position about 800 yards. Two other hunters walked right above my buddies not knowing they were there and were following a set of elk tracks that we later found out. They ended up walking clear to the bottom of the basin. what they did not know is that they were following a nice bull and he was being pushed up the other side. My buddies watched this unfold and got set up for a shot. we kept radio communication on the where abouts of the bull. I set up and had a 1375 yard shot if the bull came out towards me and he had about a 1400 to 1500 yard shot if he worked to his side. Well the bull ended up coming out in the clearing at the top of the ridge giving Jeremy a great opportunity. Jeremy dialed 39 moa elevation and the bull was ranged at 1480. Kevin called a 2.5 moa left wind hold. the bull stopped quartering away and Kevin told Jeremy to send it. I hear this shot echo across the canyon and hear no report back. All the sudden I hear them celebrating. I looked across the canyon and there lays the bull 20 yards from the ridge top deader than a doornail. the bull began to role down the steep hillside and into some very thick brush. We radioed our congradulations and I kept my eyes on the bull while they made there way down the ridge and up the other side those other two guys that were at the bottom already heard the shot and caught a glimps of the bull rolling down the hill and made there way to the bull. Jeremy was freeking out that they were going to claim his bull. I have never seen someone close that kind of distance in that terain that fast ever until that day. When he got over there those guys had already started to skin the elk thinking that a hunter shot it and left it. they hacked the hide up so bad that they could not get any good pictures of the bull. the guys could not believe that he shot that far. it made for a great story from what I heard. the bullet hit high just below the backstrap and came out at the bottom of the chest right behind the offside shoulder. those 300 grn bergers are outstanding. I ended up getting the stomach flue that evening and it made for a painful and frustrating night back at camp. the next moring it was raining and did not stop all day. we left down the mountain at around 10:00 am and did not arive back to camp till 7:30 pm. Not only was it a 4 mile hike round trip but we were soaked to the bone and I was sicker than crap. it was a hunt filled with great excitement and pain. We all agreed that it was an outstanding shot, an unbelievably ugly spot to kill an elk, and a brutal pack out but we would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My hats off to Jeremy for making the longest shot to date in our hunting party on an outstanding bull and to Kevin for being a great spotter.

a couple weeks back I went out and Killed me one of them rock yotes that we all love to shoot. one round hit at 1890 yards. the 300 grain bergers are outstanding bullets to be shooting at big game and the plentiful rock yotes. Im loving berger and Im loving my Edge.
