First AR-15 Build, Opinions.

Looking at a DEL-TON, Olympic (Flat Top Upper) or a BCM Upper. Whats your opinion on these three companies? Ive heard lots of good reviews on BCM's products. For the base price of a just an upper of the BCM I can get a DEL-TON with a whole kit setup without a stripped lower, with trigger and all. The Olympic upper I was interested in is the flat top with parts kid, needs barrel and lower assembly. I havent heard much about Olympic. I'm not looking for anything top quality, But I also don't want a rifle that ill have to scrap in a year. Any opinions? Suggestions? Thanks

Are you putting it together from the ground up? If so, don't mess with the kits. If you go with a kit you throw aside one of the main reasons for building your own AR, which is building the gun specifically for your needs. Once you've got your lower receiver in hand, you can find every part you need on the internet.

Find yourself some good receivers, and then decide what you need the build to do and how you want it to look and start buying parts. I've built ARs off of several different manufacturers lowers and my favorite receivers to build on are from Mega Machine out of Tumwater, WA. Mega forged receivers are as good as you'll find. I've also built a lot of extremely great shooting ARs with DPMS parts.

Olympic parts aren't bad, and they will most likely function fine, but you can usually get better parts for less money than Olympic.

Yeah Im building it from the ground up. Only reason I was looking at the Del-Ton kit is because it did come with a complete upper and a trigger kit. All it needs is a lower. With the kit it has all the Magpul furniture that I was going to add after building it. That would be the only reason I would consider going with Del-Ton. Im really considering a BCM 16" upper though. I was just posting to see what peoples responses are to these companies.

I have never built a ar, but I have a complete del-ton ar-15 and it performs great. I only had one jam due to a reloading error and it shoots very well.

If it's already configured the way you want, the Del-Ton will probably meet or exceed your expectations. What kind of lower do you have or you plan to use?

That will work. I'm curious to see how it all goes together for you. Once you get all the parts and screw them all together let us see what you created.

You'll be addicted after you find out how easy it is to put an AR together. You'll also be amazed at how quickly a small AR part kicking around the bottom of a safe or toolbox can morph into a full firearm over time.
