OK, here's the scenario. You have 1500.00 to build a long range combination. Give me rifle, scope, rings, mount, caliber, and reloading equipment. If you could start from scratch, what would you build?

Ok. Can I assume that budget doesn't include DROS, tax and shipping?

I'll give this some thought and get back to you with details.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Savage rifle, Bushnell/Weaver/Burris scope and Lyman reloading kit.

I have been through this one a few times. If I had to do it over again for $1500 I would probably go with the below.
Savage long range hunter in 300wsm Can be had for about $800.
Vortex viper hs long range 4-16 about $500
EGW 20 moa Base $40
Burris extreme rings $50
Dies RCBS $30
And would try and find a used press and other accessories used on forums and craigslist. My dad has picked up 2 full starter setups for $50 in the last 6 months.
Thats around $1500.
slso I would watch the forums and buy as much used as posable.
If I had to have all new stuff I would buy the cheaper savage rifle for around $450 and use the remainder for reloading supplys.

heres my build for about 1500 - sub 1/4" groups with quality ammo

I woukd save up 4k than start my build. Many times i went cheap and regretted it over and over. Imo.

Someone just listed a Savage LRH 6.5x284 with Mark 4 scope and dies for $1400 in theguns for sale threads.

Not sure what 600+ yds means to you. I erred on the low mag side for reasons of optical quality. All new equip.

Here is the value plan:
Howa 1500 7 mm Rem Mag $510
RCBS competition dies $100
Burris signature rings & steel base $65
(arrange offset inserts to get 20 MOA)

Option 1: Conquest 3.5-10x44 Z-600 $800
(good choice if a BDC reticle is your cup of tea)

Option 2 includes an outstanding bino and bipod:
Burris MTAC 3.5-10x42 $420
(good optics, mil/mil reticle/turrets, made in Philippines)
Pentax 10x50 PCF WPII $190 (great porro prism bino)
Harris bipod $130

Were you saving to buy a new couch?
ha ha very funny. the couch is old (25 years) but it is still in great shape!:) its in my movie room along with 3 other couches and a 9' screen with a 1080p projector, 7.1 surround with 2 cerwin vega 15" dedicated subs!. the new ones are in the front room for visitors. i bet i could buy 2 of these guns for half of what you paid for a rifle that shoots twice the size of groupsgun)

I would go with a Savage or Howa stock gun. I personally would look at the 6.5x284 or 260 in the Savage and 6.5x55 in the Howa. The Howa is going to be really tough to beat IMO because it is very well priced to start, to keep your overall package under $1,500, but you will also have a great action to build off of later on. $520-750

Burris Signature rings and bases- $75

SWFA 3-9x42 with mil quad reticle- $600 MIL/MIL scope excellent turrets, plenty of power for 600 yards shooting, compact and nice for a decent carry option.

Redding micrometer seating die set- a great die for precision loading- $92

Lapua brass in any of the 3 calibers I mentioned!

You are getting me all fired up just thinking about the potential of this setup!

Current:
Caliber is up to you! I chose .308.
Stevens 200-$330
E.R. Shaw 24" barrel-$200
Choate Tactical-$250 with DBM
WOTac 4-14x50-$330
TPS rings-$67
Weaver rail-$30
Tac-Ops Cheek piece-$30
Caldwell 6-9in Bipod-$40
Kydex Cheek piece-Free because I made it.

Future:
Rifle Basix Trigger-$100

Even after the new trigger this would still be under $1500 unless I forgot something or added wrong:rolleyes:
Plus building your own rifle is very rewarding!
