Rangefinder????

Hello
I'm in the market for a rangefinder that can consistently range deer sized game out to 1000yds. I really hope I won't have to spend $2000 dollars to get this done but this isn't a cheap sport. This year I used a Leupold RX-1000TBR and though overall I thought is was a good rangefinder, especially for bowhunting I was having trouble getting it to consistently give me a reading on deer in the 350yd range and beyond. Right now I'm looking at 3 different models, the Leica Rangemaster CRF 1600, the ZIESS Victory PRF 1300yd, and the Swarovski Laser Guide 8x30 1500. My questions are am I looking in the right place or am I barking up the wrong tree? Does anybody have any personal experience with these units and what kind of performance can I expect from them? My Leupold will most definitely read a rimrock canyon wall 1000yds away but that does me know good when the intended target is standing in the middle of the prairie or way out in a wide open field. Hopefully someone out there has some 1st hand experience and can provide me with some better guidance on which direction I should go with this. Thanks again.

I'm not sure about the others, but I have the Leica and it will range deer at the range you are talking. I also had a Leupold like you are talking about and the it does not even belong in the same sporting goods store as the others. I am really happy with my Leica.

I'm in the same boat as you. From the research I've done, it seems the swarovski is the one to get. That's what I've done with other glass, and when I finally got tired of buying the less expensive brands and wound up with swarovski binos, I've never looked back and regretted it. My problem is reading the write up here on LRH regarding the new G7 rangefinder. My wife was reasonably okay with the $1000 swarovski, but when I told her I wanted a G7 at $1600.....well I don't need to go into specifics.
 
I have owned and field tested all 3 that you mentioned. I would go with the Leica 1600 it it were my money.

Next step up would be the Vectronix Terripin PLRF 05 or the Gunworks G7-BR2 But I have yet to personally test these two. Also they will be a little over double in price of the three you mentioned.

There is more info and threads on this forum about RF's than you can read in a day. If you want to know more about them I would do a search using the google search bar at the top of the page.

But for the criteria and price you mentioned in your OP , you will be hard pressed to beat the Leica 1600.

I have the leica 1200 and will soon be purchasing the leica 1600. It is a very nice rangefinder very clear and accurate. The zeiss 1300 a friend of mine has and that would be my second choice, it is also Very accurate with its ranges and the one thing i really liked about the zeiss is that it reads when you let off the botton not when you push down.

Both amazing rangefinder and will blow your mind compared to your leupold. Leupold should have stuck with rifle scope their rangefinders suck!
 
I just got a leica 1600 from camera land and couldn't be happier it ranges cattle out to 1200 yards and I have got several readings on small objects out to 1900 yards..need to get out in the field and do some more testing, but looks like a winner to me.

Not trying to hijack the thread here, but what do you guys find about the leica that tops the swarovski? In most of the threads, reviews, etc. that I've read, folks seem to prefer the swaro. Seeing three responses in a row quickly like that preferring the leica has got me rethinking this seriously.

My leica and others i have uses have always read beautifully everytime where as for the swarovski though it is an excellent rangefinder and i have seriously thought about one i seem to alway have problems reading ranges. Another thing that really sold me on the leica over the swarovski is the read out and the range square or circle is 100 times brighter and easier to see on the leica where as for rhe swarovski it is very dim and hard to see.

+1 for leica!!
 
I have run all three also...I am currently running the zeiss...I found that the Swaro was superior if it was on a tripod and you had enough time...two things I don't usually have in the field :) I bought the zeiss before the crf1600 came out..I already had the crf900 and love it but it came up a little shy...I don't think you could go wrong with either, but the Leica fits in a shirt pocket and the Nimrod small pouch:)
