I have a winchester model 70 cassic sporter chambered in 300wby, 26" barrel, break, glass bedded shooting 180gr hornady interlok 3 shots touching at 100yds. looking to make this a 1000+yd rifle. I am new to the long range world and would love some input on what I can do to reach my goal.gun)gun)gun)

Its going to be difficult with factory weatherby freebore, the only way you may decently sucessful is to run a stout charge of H4831sc or right at a compressed load of H1000 under 208 amaxes, and lots of practice.

I'm loading 84.5gr of imr 7828 behind the 180gr hornady interlok. Shoots real wellat 200. Under an inch. Will the heavier bullet hold trajectory longer?

The bullet you are currently shooting has a ballistic coefficient of .447 the one that I speak of has a .648 but you will need 82-85grns of H1000 and a oal of about 3.650" to get in the ballpark on velocity and accuracy.

Start moving your targets out to 1,000yd intervals.

Make a drop/wind chart.

It's already a thousand yard shooter if you do your part.

What scope have you got on it?

The interlock is a great performing bullet. For target shooting you might want to consider the Bergers or Lapua Scenars though.

The Scirocco II is also a great hunting bullett and the 180gr has a .520 BC. They shoot great for me in my 300 Rum and 300WM.

They'd be worth a look as well.

The Nosler Accubond 200gr may well be the best all around LR hunting bullett for the .30 Cal so try it as well while you are experimenting.

the scope is a burris 4.5-14 fullfield II with a ballistic plex reticle. if I zero it at 200 I can bust milk jugs out to 600 using the marks in the reticle.

Alright, lets clear up some stuff. My .300 wby can make a 1000 in its sleep, so there is no need to cram a bunch of any powder to get it to a 1000 yds. but you can if want. First I would like to state that the interlock is a hunting bullet and not a long range match type bullet. I would develop a load with one of the high BC match type bullets. Hornady Amax and BTHP Match, Berger VLD or Hybrid, Sierra MK. I would take advantage of the case capacity of the WBY. and push as high a bc bullet ( over 200 gr ) as I could. Yes I can send a 190gr MK at at over 3100fps but the ballistics are better on the 208gr amax @2950, plus I use less powder a little less pressure and longer barrel life. I found my rifle likes the 208 under 81.5gr of IMR7828ssc, but h1000, Retumbo, H4831, RL22, RL25 all could work well just depends what your rifle likes. I like the 208 gr amax because of quality and cost and high bc, you can't beat $31/100.

I don't see what freebore has to do with anything other than extra velocity. Yes some bullets don't like the jump but your Winchester may not have freebore. It sounds like your rifle is set except for two crucial items (maybe 3) first is your glass. You need a decent scope with at least 10x and enough elevation adjustment to dial up to 25moa. My load takes 23.7 moa at a 1000yds.
Next would be your trigger. You need a light crisp trigger to get consistent accuracy at those ranges. I think under 3 lbs. You maybe able to safely adjust yours down that far but I'm not that familiar with the Model 70 trigger. Mine is set right around 2.5 lbs, I can go lower but this is still my hunting rig I don't want a trigger any lighter for hunting. A quality bipod would be the third thing but you could always shoot of bags without one.

Once you shoot a 1000 yds with this you might get the bug to take it farther. You should be able to take it past 1800 ballistically. You could always do more but then it wouldn't necessarily be a practical hunting rig anymore. Good luck.

The freebore myth is not an issue. I have numerous freebore rifles that are excellent 1000 yards killers. The 300 wby is an excellent cartridge shooting on average 125 fps behind the 300 RUM which is not much difference really in a hunting situation. I was shooting one of mine yesterday with the c32 180 grain cutting edge bullets which are high .5's bc. With that bullet it is a 1000 yard killer. The cutting edge and Barnes ttsx like to be seated off the lands a bit making them good choices for freebore rifles. The 200 grain barnes is a 1000 yard killer out of a 300 wby. The 180 scirroco is also a good choice. With the thick copper jacket they also like to be seated off the lands for best accuracy.

Why is everyone trying to load his mind up with crap, yes the freebore does not effect the accuracy of most hunting bullets, however it typical does with bergers and jlk's, and yes the cutting edge bullets have a high bc for weight, but they should at 1.25 each, the 208 amaxs usually work just fine being jumped an are usually about 28 cents a piece, yes I use 80.5grns of H4831 not tame, don't attemp it. As for the 81.5grns of 7828 load mention previously, 85.5 grns of H1000 with 208s will give you more velocity with less pressure, a higher load density, and is less temp sensative even though both are pretty stable.

Why would a win 70 have freebore unless win sent it to have roy chamber it? Freebore was a weatherbyfactory trick not something that magically occured anytime a cartridge was chambered in a weatherby caliber.
For 1000 yd stuff I personally would go with the smk, amax or berger.
Yes sirroccos and accubonds etc work but at a dime superior accuracy is everything and the bergers are much better than hunting bullets at 1700 fps.
Also the odds are good a target bullet will shoot better.

To clear up the freebore question, yes. My mod 70 has freebore. When winchester chambers a rifle in a weatherby caliber they build it to factory spec which includes the infamous weatherby freebore. This is not an issue for me in terms of accuracy. As stated above, it shoots sub moa with the load I am using. All of the info here has been great! I am going to change bullets to one with higher BC and figure what load my rifle likes. The next step will be to get the right optics. Do any of you have experience with the custom turrets from leupold?

Hey Toddc, fyi any firearms manufacturer has to use saami spec weatherby freebore to avoid extreme chamber pressure spikes when using weatherby ammo, win, sako, rem, ruger, etc... they all have it unless you have a barrel custom chambered. As for the dials, I just dial up normalby counting or watching the numbers, never cared much for a dial based on a educated guess when so many things can affect your poi.

Have you measured freebore or just assuming it has it? ve seen factory rifles with many different throats in the same caliber and the same run. I'd check the throat before I purchased bullets. Even then its a crapshoot some guns shoot vlds with a huge jump and others wont shoot em jammed. But if you have a lotta space it would at least direct you to bullets that like a jump.

I have not measured it but have maxed out the oal to fit the mag minus .02 and they still have to jump. I consider this freebore.
