Remington extractor options!

I have to rem bolts that I need to open up the bolt face a little. They were out of LH LSS's both ultra's and I'm now using a WSM case. Win brass is a little bigger measuring .538 (REM .531)and the groove is not as far forward causing the brass to bind in the bolt leaving a ring on the brass above the extractor groove. My question is I did not want to risk opening up the bolt and have the factory extractor fail (not much meat in the nose of the bolt to taper or even shorten it to clear brass) so do I want a sako or M-16 style ? Second who hear can do it and has a decent turn a round? Opinions wanted.

I have both, two Sako style extractors & one M-16 style extractor. For my .002 I would tell you flat out to go with the M-16, as it is pinned in place. In the event of a catastrophic case failure, the pinned M-16 is going to stay put much better than the Sako; not being pinned could (& I say could) send that Sako sailing, hopefully not into your face.

Will it happen? Probably not...

Could it happen? hell yes it could...

When going to a WSM style case you must chamfer the bolt face rim without disturbing the
extractor because the case head is not seated on the bolt face and head space will not be correct
because the case will hold the case head off the bolt face unless it is cleared.

There is no reason to change the extractor unless you just want to.

Do yourself a big favor. Call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Guage, order one of his bolts set up right!!!

Sell yours and be way ahead $ wise. Today IMO it is stupid money wise to pay to open an bolt, add a sako or m16 extractor in lieu of just buying a better bolt to begin with and selling the old bolt.

Well stated BH, I agree with that statement. I for one, can attest to how easy it is to get a high quality piece for what I consider a very reasonable cost. I ordered an oversized Rem 700 LA/LH bolt for my 6-284 build. It came (by choice) with the first & only M-16 extractor I have... had I known then what I know now....
