With the lack of snow for snowmobiling, I have been out at my hunting shack clearing some spots for bait for next year. I went out last weekend and put up some steel at the first spot across from the shack.....1063 yards. I had a breeze from 11 o clock, held about two feet left and hit EXACTLY where I was aiming....6-6.5 X 47l WITH 105 vldS. I knew that this wasn't right. But since I was 15 miles from my range I just went with it. Next shot...dead center. I felt a pickup and held over about a foot....missed my first hit by about 3 inches. Waited a while, felt my first condition come back and put 3 more in the same splatter mark as the first. 3 1/2 inch group including the hold over. Hit the range on the way home and was off horozontaly by 1 1/2 min.

Feeling cocky!!!

Went out today and put out another steel at the next spot....1360 yards. Conditions.......HORIBLE. My brother was with me....took a shot at the 1063 steel....held at least 10 feet right....wind was 2-4 oclock from 15- 30 mph. Missed left by at least 5 feet..... held over and put two quickies on target. Again. 6-47L. My brother (7mm rem mag- 168 JLK's) holds way over and get a good solid hit. Gotta figure he was holding at least 12 feet. Next two were left. I took 3 with my 300 WBY match gun..(210 berger at 3280) and held about eight feet....two solid and one miss right. About this time we quit trying to read the wind.

Now I swing over to the 1360 steel....That puts the wind at between 1 and 3 oclock...again 15 - 30 MPH. 8 shots no hits with my 300....only saw one impact....dead on for vert and about 4 feet left. I had origonaly dialed in 5 MOA right and was holding for the rest. Gotta figure I was holding at least 10 feet on top of the 5 MOA.

Kinda disapointed....figured I could have read the wind better. I wish I had my NP-R1 retical and held MOA instaid of feet. Going to give it another shot tomarow when the light is better. Still going to be windy. Maybe pick up a trace or two.

If you've got an android or blackberry powerd phone download the shooter app, well worth the $....it uses local weather station winds and its got a wind dial that works wonders...put one shot out of my 300 wsm 3" from the top of a wood fence post at 668 yards in 12-15mph winds...dialed for wind and held 2 mil dots high n watched splinters fly...gunna put steel plates around the family farm a@440,880&1140(farthest I can go at home) but the splinters were still cool

I have a weather station. Kestrol 3500. I printed out a new drop chart each day (as in I loaded the ele, baro, temp based on the days forcast). My drops have all been confermed many. many times. I have a wind chart on both of my guns. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 MPH from 300 to 1500 yards. Just simply take a wind reading, conferm the temp and baro are close and let fly.

The trouble....wind switching in both velocity (15 -30 MPH) and direction (2 oclock to 4 oclock and from 1 oclock to 3 oclock)!! My elevation was spot on!!

And I can tell you another thing.......600 and 1400 yards are two COMPLEATLY different things....apples and oranges. I can GAURANTEE that I would have been 10 for 10 at 600. I don't even have steel at 600 any more. Waste of time. OK, not REALLY a waste, but it's kind of like shooting groups at 100 yards. Kinda boaring. :D

Like I have said on other threads, my wind dope is in feet and inches....it is really hard (for me anyway) to dope 14.5 feet at XXXX yards. With my new NP- R1 on my hunting gun my wind dope is in MOA.....just set to 22X (or 11X) and use the hash marks. I have parked that gun till next season. I will be using my IBS match gun on the 1360 yard spot. It is 300 FPs faster with the same bullet......(kinda imprtant since I am down below 1500FPS and hovering around that 1000 ft pound mark). The gun tracks perfectly and has very little recoil with the break and the extra 5 LB weight added for "F" class (22 LBS). Just debating a new scope with the NPR1 retical, or even keep the scope and have NF do a swap.

It will use your station too if its got Bluetooth....it gives you the drift and drop in inches and moa.......well worth ten bucks I think...

I should add before you tear me apart, I know 600&1400 are apples and oranges...I've only put 22 rounds out of my gun so far, so the fence post kill (4' tall x 4" wide target) isn't bad I don't think....add the fact it was factory ammo and a factory bbl I'm still surprised at myself....ok so maybe I got lucky, I still hit it....

I guess I wasn't clear...It wasn't the wind that got me.....I have no problem with wind.....it was the crazy WIND SWITCHES....both in velocity and direction. I have shot some serious small groups in high wind in 1K BR competiton...but the wind held STEADY, and I shot kinda fast!! :D Here I am shooting WAY slow....trying to dope EACH shot. And where I had a 15 MPH wind where I was at, on the other side of the valley it may well have been 30 MPH. We are shooting across a big valley... no wind flags!! I might bring a camera along tomarrow and snap a few pics.

The wind could be doin all sorts of crazy stuff in the vally, sorry I missed the " across from the shack" part....I'm on my phone so I have no clue where your at either....I travel all over the county in a semi so I know how the wind can act/change in different parts of the country....

I was gunna go out today n do some yote huntin but 20-30 mph sustained winds with gusts 35-45mph I decided is just stay home n watch ppl hunt lol....hope yalls day was better than mine...

Here are a few pics.....I used a little zoom and then full zomm on the camera, I ten used my scope and spotting scope.

Lets see if they turn out.

Nice pics...I can totally understand now,I am from the "show-me state" lol....the small rollin hills with the double step in the vally, with the wind rollin into the valley, yeah the wind currents would be crazy....

A few more pics......Last one is from the 1063 steel looking back at the shack. We are middle of the hill, on stilts. There is a little hut at the top of the hill...about 1000 yards behind us. A couple of 30-30 guys use that one.
