168 Berger Hybrid

Run the VLD over 44.8 gr RL 15 in 308. Loaded to fit detachable magazine so well off lands but shoots 1/4" groups at 2700.

Haven't tried them yet, read about them though .519 G1 .266 G7, the 185's were .567 G1 can't remember the G7 either should be good for f-class.

Tank, what chambering? I'm sure you've thought about the 180, but I figure I'd toss it out there.

Good: .308 Winny

I've thought about the 185's, the 175's in OTM, SMK, CC, and Berger VLD. I'm boiling it down to recoil control for sustained shooting w/o a break. I'm thinking that the 185's will require a close to max load to get good velocity. The 175's though 10grains lighter will still require a close to max load for good velocity. The 168's will give less recoil, and will be able to get away with a medium load and still be at a good velocity especially with the Hybrid. I'm assuming I can run the bullet right around 2650-2700 fps to get enough velocity to be accurate and balanced at 1000yds. The reason I am wanting the 168 is due to my barrel just loving the 168NBT's. However they don't do well past 850 with the load I am using as a hunting load. I can probably push them faster, but I figure I can use this load to shoot at 800yds and shorter. When I need to go farther, than that is when I can use the 168 Hybrid. Am I thinking straight, or am I putting to much thought in to this adventure?

Oh, Roger that. I was thinking .284. :D

Tank if your going to try the 1000yrd instead of just the 5,6, and 800yrd you may want to get a 28" 243 barrel in 8 twist and use 107smk's or 115 dtacs, I use once fired LC brass neck it down and turn the necks, for the money they make awesome 243 cases, and with the heavies the 243 will treat you better at 1k, not that I don't have faith in the 308, I love mine, but it does come up a little short in horsepower. The 30x284 with the new 185 hybrids would be the ticket, I think it would hurt some feelings in f-class and recoil would be to bad.

Is the 30x284 the same as the 30-06 in velocity and powder level? I hate the recoil of the 06! I wish the .243 was an option. I have to work with what I got right now though. If I went 6mm, it would be the 6XC instead of the 243.

I guess its due to case efficency, it sounds really odd but it will out run the 06 by 50-70fps with equal bullets and barrels but recoil falls on the middle ground between the 308 and the 06. The 284 case is an awesome design, imo in efficiency it takes 2nd place only to the weatherby double radious.

Interesting. Do you currently own one in this caliber?

Currently I do not but I had one 4 years ago as a 16.5# light gun, 28" 10 twist .290" throat, was trying to shoot 220smk's and 208 amax's but it didn't have the hp to get the heavys there without a lot of drift, but with the newer powders and 175-185 grainers with bc's that high I'm sure it would be awesome, at 600 it was a tac driver, and with a break at that weight it was like shooting a ridiculously loud 22mag. It got cut and rechambered in 300 wby.
