My wife drew a WA Modern Firearm cow tag this year for a hunt that runs during the same time as the general season 3-Point or better bull season. This is only her second year hunting and she was pretty fired up to get the chance to go after elk to say the least! We set up camp the day before the season opener and did a little scouting the night before. I had hunted the area earlier in the year and taken a cow with my muzzleloader, so I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted us to be the next morning. She had decided that she wanted to try for a bull for the first three days unless we weren't seeing many animals. Now, I've hunted elk since I was 9 years old and the amount of hunters we saw the next morning was SHOCKING! I wish I would have video taped it! So the first day was pretty much a bust although we did watch a guy across a canyon shoot a nice 6 point, but about 80% of the people had either left or gone somewhere else by the next morning. We located a herd with a couple of bulls in a little pocket where I had seen elk during the muzzleloader season, so we focused our efforts on them over the next four days. We hiked out to the end of an old spur road before daylight on the 5th day and caught the herd crossing an opening just after legal shooting light. We were eventually able to see that there was a legal bull in the middle of the clearing at 220 yards. I got Stacy set up with her Tikka 270 loaded with 130 grain Accubonds and she put him on the ground! She did a great job and tuffed out 5 long days of hunting. After 5 trips for Bill to get him out, we were on our way home.

That is sweet! Good for both of you. BTW, you both know a 270 cannot kill an elk right? This is just some fluke! :D

I am totally kidding. I would NOT hesitate to take either of my 270s out for elk!!

Congratulations to your wife.

Good Hunting

Good job! I look at the terrain you folks tend to hunt in Washington and it is THICK. Well done to both of you for sticking it out.

Happy hunting and good shooting in 2012 :)

Elkmen, "My wife drew a WA Modern Firearm cow tag this year for a hunt that runs during the same time as the general season 3-Point or better bull season." Sorry, she drew a "permit" to use her 2011 Western WA Modern Firearm Elk Tag on an "antlerless" elk in the Winston 520 GMU November 5-15. The Western WA Modern Firearm 3 pt. minimum elk season for Winston 520 GMU also runs November 5-15, which means that with her "antlerless permit" she can shoot either an "antlerless" OR "3 pt. or better" elk with the same tag as outlined in Washington's 2011 Big Game Hunting Seasons & Regulations as well as wdfw.wa.gov. There are some idiots out there, but very, very few on this site. Thanks.

PS - She has submitted her harvest report to the state and the transport tag is in the freezer with the meat and will remain there until it is consumed as required by law.

That is interesting! I don't know anything about Washington game laws. Here in Ohio, they sell "anterless" tags. A legal buck (which you can only take one per year), has 3" of antler on at least ONE side or more. So many hunters refer to the antlerless tags as "doe tags." But this is not so. You can fill every single tag you buy in Ohio with a deer that has a pecker-n-nuts. Just better make sure they are all buttons or satisfy the "anterless" description.

I think Kentucky is worded very similarly.

Ahhh!!!!!!! I see and understand now as I also live in Washington. My last cow tag here was strictly that but I am aware of the opportunitys to hunt both!!

Yeah, that bull must have thought that Tikka was a much bigger caliber otherwise he wouldn't have flopped over like that!!!

LOL!! I've killed the majority of my elk with a 130 grain bullet out of a 270. I always laugh when my choice of bullet weight becomes a topic of ribbing. I'm sure you're right; that elk would have just chuckled and kept moving if it had any idea someone had the gall to use a 130 grain in the 270 :)

Yep, there's only a handful of hunts across the state where the special draw hunt corresponds with the general season hunt. My antlerless muzzleloader permit was a permit only season in that GMU, but had I not taken a cow during that permit season, I would have been able to hunt any other open unit during the Western WA General Muzzleloader season. The tag is good for the general elk season and the permit allows you to hunt the special season you drew for.

great story, i'm always impressed with the wives that go along and you get to do this together. hats off to you and your wife!
