IMR7828 Powder

A friend who passed away a few years ago gave me 2 lbs. of IMR7828 powder. It's been sitting in storage and I'd like to use it. Is there anyone out there using this powder with good results? If so what caliber and bullet weight? Since this is a very slow burning powder, what is the recommended primer? Any and all responsed will be greatly appreciated.

I've been using the SSC version (IMR claims same burn rate) lately in a couple chamberings, both with CCI standard LR primers. One being the 300 WSM with 230 grain Berger Hybrids at 2700 fps, and the 243 Win with 100 grain Hornady BTSP bullets at 3025 fps. You're right, it is a slow burner and it will produce good velocity for the heavy for caliber bullets and it's generally regarded as temp stable. Both of the loads mentioned above have produced excellent accuracy potential. I certainly haven't noticed anything wierd about it.

I use in a 7mag with 160gr. Nosler AB and use it in the SSC version for a 243 with 95gr. Ballistic Tips. I got involved in a conversation with a retired Remington engineer and he told me that the 7828 was originally developed for the 7mag. I do find it more temp sensitive than H1000.

I used it in my 300 win. mag, using a 180 grain Hornady interlock.
I can't remember of the top of my head what amout of grains I use,
but it was deadly out to 300 yuards.gun)

300wby 168gr barnes TTSX 84.0gr of IMR7828 Fed 215GM 3140 Fps really accurate in my rifle, Vanguard submoa 24in barrel.

I have also had good luck with it in...
6.5-284 140 VLD
782 Warbird several different 150 gr and 180 gr bullets

7828 is a good powder, even though its listed just a notch hotter than H1000 on the burn chart its actually closer to H4831sc, and it does well in the wby mags from 270 to 340, also has probably the highest velocity in a 300win mag under 165s, is good for 270 an 7mm wsm's and the 7mm rsaum. I keep a pound on hand but have primarily replaced it with 4831. Also as mentioned its pretty temp stable and works well (usually better) with standard large rifle primers than it does with magnum primers.

It is excellent powder for magnum cases if that is what you are loading. I use it often.

I have been using 7828ssc in 2 different 7 mags with great results. One is a Remington 700 SPS shooting 160g NAB and the other is a Weatherby Vanguard shooting 150 NBT. Both shoot about 3/4 of an inch or under at 100 yards consistently. Both guns are stock. Currently my favorite powder for magnum cases. Primers are Remington 9 1/2 magnums
