.338 Lapua load, I have a question before I pull the trigger?

Do you think 97 grains of H1000 behind a 250gr Hornady match bullet is to much? I just have not seen anyone load 97 grains, most are around 91? Thase were loaded by someone I trust. The high end in the Hornady manual is 99 grains?

It's always best to start low and work up.

Is this a new rifle you have yet to fire??? If not what have you been shooting in it?

I have 20 rounds of factory Black Hills Ammo through it. I'm thinking that is going to be fine, but maybe not the most accurate load for this rifle. I am thinking that, as most loads I have seen on here and another forum for this same rifle is down near 91 grains. I will just shoot and see where I am at with it and maybe have him load a little lighter next go around. Thanks!

Every rifle is different, my 338 LM won't allow me to load up to what most people use in their rifles.
I would do as WildRose suggested and start low then work up.
97 grains is pretty high to start with, if it was me I'd be starting down around 93.
JMHO, YMMV.

I can see your dilemma, just a quick review of some of the resources out there and I find results with this combination all over the map. One source recommends 88 grains to start with. I have no experience with the Lapua, but I'd take a step back. That might mean pulling a few bullets, and you could end up right where your at, but you're concerned enough to be here.

Since this load is a bit on the hot side I'd also be checking to see how close they are to the lands of YOUR gun. Not someone elses but yours. When you already have a hot load and you start getting close to the lands, say anything 10thou and closer, the launch pressure can spike up in a hurry and ruin your day real fast.

My load in my 338 RUM is 97.5 grains of H-1000 behind a 250 SMK. It is right at 3021 FPS. My load for my 338 Lapua is 93 grains of H-1000 behind a 300 SMK. It is right at 2824 FPS. Both loads shoot very well.

98 grains ( a compressed loading)of H1000 is whats rated as MAX with the 250 gr Hornady in the manuals..???
