75gr bergers in mag.

i know that the 75gr amax cannot be seated safely to magazine oal, but i was wondering if the 75gr berger vlds could or the 75gr swift scirocco? i know that they are all vld ogives, but just wanted to check with some folks. worst case scenario, i know i can do the 70gr vlds, but this is going to primarily be a cyote gun and i am not worried about pelt, and i am not in the business of making any animal suffer, so i would like any testimonies of performance on animals, i want drt one shot drops, and idk if a target bullet will do that. i know the amax will, if i can shoot them, as many people say they expand almost as fast as a vramint bullet. thanx for all info! o, other suggestions welcome as well.

No, the Berger 75 VLDs will not work through a magazine (2.260" OAL), due to it's long ogive. With the 223/5.56mm case, you're limited to about a 7 caliber ogive in order to have a bullet that will seat properly in the case, and still function through the magazine. You've only got about .500" from the case mouth to the max OAL, and it's this dimension that limits bullet design in projectiles intended for magazine use in this cartridge. Anything longer than a 7 cal ogive and you'll wind up seating part of the ogive beneath the case mouth when it's at 2.260" OAL, and that's a bad thing looking for an opportunity.

Good news is, Berger does make a 77 grain BTHP that has a 7 caliber ogive, and will function perfectly at mag length. It's their part number #22425. Plenty of other choices out here as well, but I hope that helps.

Don't know about the sciroccos, never messed with them, never seen any. However, the 7 caliber ogive limitation remains in effect. If it has anything much more than 7 cal, it's not suitable and will have to be too deeply seated. Just measure from meplat to the major diameter of the bearing surface, and if the distance is more than .500", it's not going to be a good candidate for mag loading.

Any of these bullets, including the long ogive VLD style projectiles will work in the AR, just not through the magazine. The 600 yard stage of the NMC-HP course requires the rifles to be single loaded, which is where the concept of these bullets came into being in the first place. If you're willing to single load them and use the rifle as a single shot, no problem.

As far as using them from the mag of a bolt gun, that'd depend on the dimensions of the mag itself. If it's set up for the standard SAAMI dimensions of 2.260", then you're back to single loading. Assuming it has a longer mag, then yes, you'd be able to load it out to whatever the magazine would accept. Just bear in mind, there's not necessarily any direct corelation between mag length and throating. In other words, if they match, you're golden, but if they don't, don't be surprised.

the particular rifle i had in mind was the cz 527 carbine, which i have heard does fine with Nato Spec ammo, so i assume the throat is longer (as it should be) and that would make me belive that if the mag will workj, ill be golden. of not, well then i'm off to another prospect.

I must retract this statement. A 75 grain Swift Scirocco II will fit in an AR 15 magazine.

Don't restrict yourself to a 2.26" OAL. Mod a mag and you'll be at 2.37, no problem. Mod the upper as well and you'll be hitting 2.4 OAL before you know it, and feed just like butter.

zip the front out of a PMAG with a dremel, and watch this video and you'll see the lil tiny spot on the underside of the UPPER that needs a tweak. (at 5:30)

Have you considered the 70g TTSX? I followed this thread when you first asked the question but you got advice from Kevin and he knows more than most. I have been running the 70g TTSX in my AR for hunting for about 8 months now. Very accurate bullet and does a number on game.
