I need a big thumper and have decided on a 338 rum. I have an old rem 700 in 270 and was wondering if i could re barrel it to the 338. if so what length barrel and by who? I also wouldnt mind using a savage action but cant find the long action it will need. I have never had a rifle re barreled and it is all french to me.

You can use the 270. It will need the bolt face opened up and a new barrel. It's also a good idea to use a Wyatt extended mag box. It needs a 28" barrel or longer. It's a pretty simple swap for most competent smiths.

You can't find a long action Savage?

Ive looked for them cant find anyplace that sells just the long action. How much do they run? I would rather go the savage action rout.

Jim Briggs of NSS sells just the action, look him up on Savageshooters.com. So does 3rd Generation Shooter Supply, they are a sponsor here.

You can also buy a Stevens 200 and strip it down to the action and sell all the other parts.

Are you going to shoot it single shot, or try for a repeater?

I love and prefer Savages, but the Remington is an easier action to make into a repeater.

The Savage would be easier to go single shot with the Edge, and a repeater for everything else down to 204Ruger.

Just curious why you dont just sell your 700 270 and buy a 700 338RUM? Shouldn't cost you more than $200-300 and you can go shoot....

The 270 was my first centerfire rifle and it was handed down to me from my grandmother when she got cancer at the age of 60 and was no longer to hunt anymore. So sentimental value is high and im not a big fan of selling guns anyway.

What length barrel would be best for the 338 rum? also i was thinking a hart barrel, are they good?

28" is a good length for the RUM, I definitely wouldn't go less than 26"

Hart is a good barrel. Shawn Carlock, uses a ton of them on his 338 RUM and Edge rifles.

There are a bunch of great barrel makers. Brux is another you should look at. They've really made a good name for themselves in the last couple years.

btw, don't sell your grandma's rifle.

I have an old M99 Savage thea was my great grandfathers. He bought it new in 1917. My grandmother learned to shoot with it when she was a child, so did my mother, so did my brother and sister. Someday it will go to to one of my daughters.
