300WM bullet weight problem

I've got a Savage 110 in a 300 Win Mag and it shoots 180's good but it wont shoot 150's. The best info I can find is that it is a 1-10" twist. Is this too slow a twist to stableize the light 150' and 165's? I ask because I'm hunting deer with it and 180's are too big for medium game like deer, plus I would love the flater shooting of a 150 going 3100+. Any thoughts or suggested loads? I'm a hornady fan.

The twist rate is fine And should Handel the 150s well.

Some rifles just dont like certain bullets/loads so you will have to change brands of 150 ammo
or bullets.

If it does well with the 180s you will be able to find a good 150 load.

There are boat tail and flat base bullets in 150 gr so try both styles and also try some Accubonds
(Different ojives than the Hornady's).

No, not too slow. It's too fast. For bullets of similar styles for the same caliber, lighter ones shoot most accurate with slower twists 'cause they don't need to be spun too fast to stabilize them past 1000 yards. Example: Sierra 155 grain Palma bullets leaving at 3000 fps shoot most accurate with a 1:13 or 1:14 twist. If one has a batch of bullets that are perfectly balanced, then one could use a faster 1:10 or 1:11 twist, but this happens rarely. Most 30 caliber magnums have a 1:10 twist barrel so they'll shoot 180 grain and heavieer bullets pretty good.

At 300 mag velocities with 150-gr. bullets, they'll probably shoot the most accurate with a 1:13 or 1:14 twist. A 1:10 twist will shoot even slightly unbalanced, 150 grain 30 caliber bullets at the speed max loads in a 300 mag produces, some of them won't be too close to where you aim them.

I've shot 150 through 180 grain bullets from a .300 Win. Mag. with a 1:12.7 twist, 26 inch barrel very accurate at 1000 yards, about 1 to 1.25 MOA from a 9 pound rifle with scope.

My experience with the .300's was a bit different than Barts...I have shot my old one since 1970 and it is on its 3rd barrel..all are 1-10 twist...for the 150s, try 150 grain Serria Flat Base or Nosler BTBT...with a charge of IMR 4350 and CCI Mag. primers...this has been accurate in all my Wins. and also my Wea. The Ultra mag. required a different powder, but it was also accurate with 150's...keep in mind these will be moving along when fired from a .300...my old one has a 26 in barrel and kicks the 150's out at over 3400fps...the Wea. is over 3500fps...neither at top loads...If you get a close shot, IT WILL RUIN A SHOULDER!!!!. But it shoots string flat..I have used this load on everything from coyotes to elk...it is NOT my choice of an elk load, but slipped though the ribs, they almost always drop in their tracks...for big deer, sheep, antelope, or other medium game it is a deadly load...I would give the Serria flat base the edge in accuracy...with Nosler a close second..check the Serria book for load data or Call Serria a 800-223-8799...Paul Box will give you the info...

Good advice. I have been shooting Winchester factory ammo and love shooting my 300WM but have been wanting to reload, just need to man up and get going. I have been getting sub MOA groups at 100yrds, but want better because even though its not a high end gun I think it can do better. From what I have read from you guys and some from the reloading forum, lighter bullets should be doable in the 300WM its probably just my ammo thats not up to par. When reading I have heard little about Hornady. Being a Nebraska boy I would like to shoot one of my own, so to speak, but want the best accuracy I can get too. Does Hornady just not perform or is it a preference thing? Or is this more of a reloading forum question?

Nothing at all wrong with using 180's on deer, maybe not a balistic tip but Accubond, Barnes Ive killed abunch with em. I waiting on an order of 190 bergers as we speak, perking up the old stock Sendero by the end of Jan bet on a 800 yard whitetail kill.

Really if its liking 180's stay with em

My tikka is 1in11 and does not like the 150s I have tried but likes 180s and loves 190s so I use 190s for everything.

300, I have shot lots of Hornady bullets...their Vmax is one of my favorites, but in other calibers...honestly, I have gotten a bit better accuracy with Serria and Nosler in 30 cal than Hornady...BUT I have shot many more of those also...

As for the heavier bullets in the .300 they are also excellent...for years my elk load was 200 grain Noslers..currently I am trying 168 and 190 Bergers...the 200 grain Accubond has been a real killer in my Wea...for some reason, the 180's never did much for me..guess I just never tried them that much....
