I have about 6 resources for 270 WSM 130gr with Re22 powder. All using Winchester brass. Well, I went with Norma brass. Has anyone done a water capacity test on the cases?

For 130gr bullets, Win brass, and LRM primers:
Lyman 49th has 68gr as MAX LOAD.
Nosler 6th has 65gr as MAX LOAD.
Alliant flyer has 66gr as MAX LOAD.
Handloads.com has 67gr as MAX LOAD.
Guns and Ammo has 63gr at 3010fps, probably not a max load.
Real Guns has between 63gr and 67gr for several 130gr bullets.

I have 130gr Accubonds and some 130gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertip to use as COL starting point.

I am thinking my starting point should be between 63 and 65gr.

From my experience Norma WSM brass is heavier and has less capacity than the Winchester WSM brass. I have not used RL-22 to load 130 grain bullets but I am using it with 140 Accubonds and 140 Barnes TSX bullets. My gun (Winchester Model 70 Featherweight) has a long throat so I usually have to use more powder to get the desired velocity, so I am using 67 grains with the 140 bullets.

I think that 63.0 grains should be a good starting point for you with 130 grain bullets and RL-22. You should work up looking for too much pressure. It is alway better to start too low.

Re#22 has its uses But Accurate Arms "Mag Pro" is the stuff !!!!! 74grs behind a 130 gr bullet will produce just about 3400 FPS out of a 24" bbl. That powder was designed for the WSM cartridges.

I agree that Magpro will give you outstanding velocity, however I was never able to get the accuracy from Magpro that I was able to get from other powders. It could have been that I gave up too soon or that my rifle just did not like Magpro but what ever I was never satisfied with it. I got my best accuracy from IMR-4350, RL-22 gave me very good accuracy and good velocity all in the same powder. I know that some people have gotten this from Magpro, I just was never able to do it.

This ammo is for a factory stock mdl 70 Super Grade for hunting deer, coyote, and hog. Not really looking for .5MOA. 1 MOA and velocity matching factory Winchester 130gr Silvertips(40$US/20rounds) will do.

Of the AA powders, I've only used AA2230, and it was great. R22 has been great in 7mm Mag and 270 Win. It provides very good accuracy and velocities to match factory loads in a lot of cartridges.

2 issues:

1) Load data is from 63gr to 68gr, that is a lot of bullets to shoot. Generally speaking, Norma load data has 2gr difference between max and min. They are using 204 powder, but the max velocity is well below R22 load data of ~3400fps. I have a few lbs of R22, so prefer to use that.

2) I bought the Norma cases, but most load data is using Winchester.

I was about to suggest RL-19, but after reading your last post, I guess all I can do is aggree with your starting point data of 63-63.5 gr of RL-22.
It does seem a bit of a slow powder for a 130 gr tho. Have you looked at Noslers recomendations yet? they may have something there. Popapi, sent me the link for my 140gr Accubonds and RL-19. (59.5-61.5-and 63.5)** at 64 gr I was flattening primers pretty good, not pancakes, but definately flat. My point is I was within 1/2 a grain of thier max load, and saw pressure signs. With RL-22, Judging out of my Hornady book for 270 win and 270wsm you should be safely ''ballparked'' , just be carefull as you go up. Good luck

I have not done anything with water capacities, but I have shot 71 gr of magpro in the winchester cases and norma cases under a 140 accubond. The winchester 71 grains was a good max load for me. With the norma brass I can hardly get my bolt open. I got 3325 with the winchester and 3475 with the norma. At 69 grs I'm back at 3325. And as far as accuracy with magpro, it is more accurate than I am in my rifle.

Maybe I need to start over. I'm not getting super great accuracy with Mag pro. I felt maybe it was the stock bbl ( Win Mod 70 ) IMR 7828 once produced a tight group but low velocity.

If your not moving hardly any brass when you resize then the Norma is great brass but it is softer and won't quit hack the pressure the Win or Rem will. You really got to watch the Norma and Win's for case head separation, after they thin out .010 thou the next firing will crack. Rem cases are the best for max loading. I have gone 20 firings on some and the win went 6-8 the Norma 2 but my head space was a bit long till I set it back.
I haven't loaded many 130's but the 140's like slower powder like Retumbo and 7828 speed and I can run them around 3300-3400 with stout loads. 110's love R17 and are running around 3670, smokes coyotes!
I have yet to find a accurate load with Magpro but the speed was better than any other powder I've used but alas my rifle pukes on it.
Also have found new WSM brass is way small so looking for max load with fresh cases can show signs way earlier that once fired won't.
It's an awesome cartridge, in my opinion, and packs a better punch than you think it would.

I have R19 and R22. R19 is a possibility. From the online articles I've read on reloading for WSM, R22 put up the factory velocities, and it has been my go to for 270 Win and 7mm Mag.

I really don't think there is any magic in these WSM's, they simply have more case capacity. They are an overbore, esp the 270, and it requires a slow powder. One of the selling points of the WSM was that it's short fat powder column was more efficient. Well, I can get the 270 Win to pop 130gr bullets at >3100fps with 58gr of R22, and the 270 WSM requires 8-10 more grains to provide an additional 200-300fps? The 4350 speed powders, including 3100 and R19, seem to do quite well in load data as well.

3670 fps with Re#17 110 gr Bullet ? What is powder charge ? Most I could get was 3,500 with 67grs..... What rifle are you shooting ? BBL length ?..................... Just curious is there snow on the ground at your location ? What's weather like year round in SW Montana ?
