I have about $800 to spend on a scope. I have my dedicated long range rig which is already set up and proven out to 1700 yards. That scope is a Leupold VX3 6.5-20lr, Then I have another rifle with a zeiss rapid z 800 on it which I consider my "do all" gun. I have a very accurate 7mm though and it needs a scope. I have been considering the PST, but im not a huge fan of the big knob on the eyepiece for the illumination. I have considered trying a CDS, but I like the 30mm tubes, so I am also considering another LR Leupold but maybe a 40mm objective this time.. im just not sure. looking for some suggestions or ideas. im pretty open

Morning Mike,

I'm running one of the 30mm tubed 40mm objective Leupy LR's on my dedicated hunting rig. I find it works quite well & it's easier to get in and out of my scabbards (backpack & 4 wheeler). I've also considered a PST but haven't done so yet, & more than likely won't... I do happen to have a slightly used (bout 50rnds) MK4 if you're interested....:D

Heck, cruise the used section, i've seen (sure you have too) quite a few steals on optics... you might be able to pick up another LR/T or ER/T for what you want to spend. Keep in mind, with the CDS you are limited to one rev if I recall correctly...

What kind of 7mm are you running? Shoot me some details...gun)

I sent you a PM and yeah I am thinking I love my Leupold too much to even try something new... its tempting but im having a hard time messing with sucess... what turret are you running on your 40mm leupy?

For $869 give some consideration to the Sightron SIII line. They have great glass and their turret adjustments are reliable and repeatable. A couple buddies of mine swear by them and its the only brand of glass they put on their rifles these days.

Sightron 6-24x50 SIII 30mm Riflescope

Spoken like a pro....

Kevin Cram has one for sale now in the Optics forum...Grab it while it last it is brand new and is a steal of a deal....

Mike, Here are a couple pics of the Auto Locking Turret Leupold: First pic is of the Auto locking turret next to a 1" Nikon second is mounted on my 338 RUM

It is absolutely awesome... 34mm main tube, Zero Stop, Rev counter, 120moa internal adjustment 10mils/turn & FFP.

Yeah you have to push the button to turn the knob, sounds odd but work really well.

& hey, if you run out of ammo, you can always use it as a club!! :D

Mike,
Consider talking to doug @ cameraland. I've bought 2 zeiss conquest scopes with rapid Z (dealer demo's) from him ($700-800), and have been very pleased. After I started using Zeiss glass, I sold all my leupy's and burris glass....IMO, simply no comparison. My long range rig has the rapid Z 800, but I'm going to switch it up to the Z-1000. I've got a bunch of one shot antelope kills over 500, and two long range bull elk kills (one shot each) 616, and 787 yards respectively. After using the rapidZ system over fumbling around with turrets in the field and losing opportunities at some great trophies I'm certain I will never go back unless I go to hunting prairie dogs exclusively. Having practiced with the rapid-Z system, I can hit a large baloon on a stake with one shot out to 800 yards without fumbling with knobs as long as my inputs are solid in the calculator.

I too am a zeiss fan. I have made a lot of kills with my rapid z 800's as well. and I am considering another, just not 100 % on which way I want to go. Glad to see another z-800 lover though

Do the turrets on Zeiss scopes go in the opposite direction as most of scopes? I seem to recall shooting a buddy's rifle with a Zeiss scope and having the turrets go in the 'wrong'direction.

to be honest i dont remember, the turret is a little odd in the way it is marked on my standard capped zeiss scopes... I will look this afternoon and let you know. I never adjust them so I dont really remember.

I do both. my dedicated long range rifle is my 338 and I dial with my leupold. the Zeiss scopes that I use all have the Rapid Z reticles which are hold over. I wouldnt mind trying out a zeiss with target turrets though. I am not particularly partial to either method. both have distinct advantages in my opinion.
