6.5x284 vs 6.5 creedmoor

ok Im looking for some input as to how these two compare
I dont know a thing about these calibers but Im doing research for my next build
I was thinking 308 or a 7mm-08 but these two are very intetresting and I think they are close to the other calibers I was looking at
This gun will be mostly varmits out to 1000 yards and deer/bear out to about 500-600 yards.
How do they compare to the 25-06 as to accuracy,recoil barrel life ect.
Dont need a big game gun out past 600 I have my sendero for that.

I won't try to tell you what to buy, only suggest some things to consider.
The 6.5 Creedmoor was specifically designed to shoot heavy low drag bullets from a 2.85"
It's specs: case capacity 53.5 grains, max pressure 60191 psi, case length 1.920, overall length 2.80. (a difference of 0.89")

The 6.5x 284 is a necked down 284 win. It a proven 1000 yard benchrest match winner.
It's specs: case capacity 66 grains, max pressure:59465 psi, case length 2.170, overall length 3.228, (a difference 1.058")
Shooting the same bullets the 6.5 x 284 gives higher velocity, less drop, and less wind deflection, and somewhat less barrel life than the 6.5 Creedmoor.

HOWEVER, the 6.5 Creedmoor can be shot with reasonable length VLD bullets from a 2.85 inch magazine. The 6.5x 284 cannot.. It's really intended to be shot in a mid length action, like for a 30-06. I don't know what the magazine length of a Savage 110 Predator Max 1 is, but you should check whatever make and model rifle you choose that it can handle the bullets you might want to shoot.

Barrel length and twist rate really don't affect each other. Barrel length and powder
capacity/bullet weight very much affect each other. A 24 inch barrel in a 6.5x284 will
not deliver much in performance as far as fps. I think 28 to 30 inch is were your thoughts should be with it. The creedmoor , being based on a 22-250 case with a larger
neck should do pretty well in a 24 inch. The extra inch or two in a 6.5x284 will let you
set the barrel back one time without losing it's performance.

I have a Savage LRH in6-5x284. It actually has the same barrel length as the Predator,24". Savage counts the muzzle brake in the barrel spec with the LRH. They also have the same long action and 1:8 twist. I'm getting 2965 FPS with 140gr VLD Bergers and .25-.5 MOA at 500 yards. I know a guy that gets similar performance with his Predator. It's a great shooter for the money. For the shooting you describe it should work well, and give you the energy to stretch your deer hunting to 1000 yards if you ever desire to do so. As to which caliber, ballistics with either round will very likely be superior to the rounds you mention with the right loads. Barrel life could be shorter in the 6-5x284 than most of the other rounds you mention, but for the kind of hunting you describe, it's probably academic. My personal preference would be the 6-5x284.

Greyfox, your results are not typical. Not doubting you but that is really fast for that
short of a barrel. Here is a thread off this forum. It lines up with everything else I've

I understand your point and ran into the same issues trying to get the velocity. I was successful with 59 gr. of Retumbo with 215's and,140 vld's. I chrono 2965 out of my 24" Savage and 3010 out of my 26" Cooper. Verified on an Oehler 35 and a Pro chrono. No pressure signs. Tight ES 5-15fps

So from What I have read here and other places
I should expect to get a max fps of 2900-2950(approx)
Recoil should be slightly more than the 25-06 but slightly less than the 308(recoil is a big consideration since I shoot 250-300 rounds a day durning rock chuck season)
Barrel life should be good but not great
and Accuracy should be real good
Im thinking the nosler 120 gr BTs since I will be shooting lots of rock chucks and the deer everynow and then (maybee a bear).

Heres some intersting video.

6.5 Creedmor is a pretty neat little round. Very light recoil. Less than the 6.5x284. I don't care what anyone says, less recoil makes for a gun you shoot a lot more, and therefore can get good with.

Thanks for the video very interesting never thjought to look to you tube for info on a cartridge.
I can not agree with you more thats way I keep asking about recoil I shoot alot and mild recoil makes it so much more enjoyable and the way we shoot a break is not a option

This bit of information may help you decide. The 6.5 Creedmoor 120Gr. Hornady A-Max load states a MV of 3020 with a 28 inch barrel. Shorter barrel =lower MV.

One big thing keeping me from making up my mind is these two calibers are really only avaible from savage in a factory gun.
I would really prefer a remington.
Dont get me wrong I have savage and its a great gun but there are alot more parts to be had for a remington than a savage(stocks,moa bases ect)
plus the savages only come with short barrel
I may end up going with the remington sps varmit stainless in 308 win
but I really like the balistics of these over the 308
Decisions whats a guy to do?

The TC Icon comes in 6.5 Creedmoor. If you want 26 inch barrels you'd either have to go the custom route or one of the Savage versions. Of course you can buy a Remington 30-06 length action (for the 6.5X284) and have a custom rifle built to your specs.

I wonder if you can enlighten me further - I found your above info quite interesting - what does it mean the muzzle brake on the LRH is "adjustable"? I have had muzzle brakes that have gas ports all the way around, and they kick up more dust than I like....... Is the break interchangeable?
