Hi LRH Folks

I am a Swiss/Norwegian hunter and i need some help getting started in the business of reloading and i think u are the ones who more than able to help me in that matter!
I rely on ur opinions when it comes to different materials like which brass to use or what powder or primer(match or not match).
There are so many different brands out there it is a bit confusing!

I have a Modified Remington 700 in 30-06 and a Blaser R93 in 6.5x284/270WSM/300WSM
my shooting distances while hunting would vary from 5m to 1000m(1093yards).
I know that all of my calibers have Longrange potential that is why i want to reload precision ammo.

Question Nr.1
Brass, what is the best brand of brass these days? Lapua, Norma, Remington and so on...

Question Nr.2
What powder should or can i use? Slow-burning, fast-burning, best texture to reach maximum volume?

Question Nr.3
Should i use Match or non-match primers? is there even a big difference between them?

Question Nr.4
Bullets, now i think i`ll test and shoot a lot of different bullets and see what works best for me, but it would be nice to know which bullets bring the best and flatest trajectory and what bullet in your experience brings the best results in expansion at long distances.
How does Bullet weight affect accuracy?

Question Nr.5
Is it possible to load match loads and use Hunting bullets for good accuracy?

Question Nr.6
What Reloading Recipe works the best for you? (30-06,6.5x55,270wsm,300wsm)?

Please let me also know a lil about ur procedures when reloading. ANY INFORMATION at all is worth a lot to me!!!
Thank u very much in advance

Re: Help me getting started!!

I have been shooting a 6.5x55 for a couple of years now. I have a Remington action with a 31" Broughton Barrel in 6.5x55. My best powder behind 123 gr Sierra Match kings has been IMR 4064. This is a target load. I have shot 1000 yards with it and am getting good velocities. I haven't chrono'd it yet but according to ballistic calculators I'm between 2900-3000 FPS. I have tried almost every powder but the 4064 works best for me. I use BR2 primers with this load and Winchester brass.
I also hunt with a Tikka 6.5x55 I haven't found a load that shoots Sub MOA. but the more I shoot and clean the tighter it gets. It doesn't like the 4064 but it seems to like Reloader 19 and Reloader 22 depending on the weight of the bullet. I've been hunting with Hornady 129 gr SST's using winchester brass and standard primers(wolf) for a hunting load. About the longest shot I have is 300 yards. I just don't spend the extra money on BR 2's for hunting. I load 46 grains of reloader 19 for this gun. I'm certainly not a professional shooter. There are many more folks on this forum who could probably help much more than me but I just thought I would share my experience of what works for me.

Isn`t it possible to load match load with Hunting bullets?

Re: Help me getting started!!

Yes you can load that match recipe with a hunting bullet. Different bullets create different pressure depending on the bearing surface I believe. You would probably want to drop the amount of powder a couple grains and gradually work back up watching for signs of pressure.

Re: Help me getting started!!

that is good to know! if u got any more Info, tips and tricks for me i invite u to share as much as u can, it would help me a lot!!!

Re: Help me getting started!!

In the 30/06 i like IMR 4350 about 59grs with a 150 gr bullet depending on the brand of bullet i will go up or down .5 grains of powder. I use win. brass and cci primers. I personaly dont care for hornady SST's but i have had good luck with nolser accu bonds, speer sp boat tail, and seirra's.

Re: Help me getting started!!

thank you toolman for ur input! isn`t a 150 grain bullet a little to light for a -06?

Re: Help me getting started!!

It all depends on what your doing with it. I mainly hunt whitetails with mine and 150's do great.

Re: Come on Guys!!!!Help me getting started!!!!(Rechambered 6.5x55 to 6.5x284)

Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. I went out of town for a couple of days.41 grains of 4064.That's what works for me. I would start a little lower and work up.

On the 6mmBR website home page, left side has links to specific calibers. The 6.5-284 page has lots of useful info on many of the questions you have as well as load data. I shoot a 6.5-284 Cooper varmint style rifle and have had very good luck with loads right out of the gate. Good luck.
