In my 280 ackley shooting 162 A-Max. I have tried h4831 sc. It was really consistent shot really good under 1/2" with 56g. @2750fps. any more and the primers would flaten. I tried 56.5g of R-22 @. It shot almost as good under 3/4". About the same speed any more and it would flaten primers.I am thinking of trying H1000 or Retumbo. Do you think I could get a little more velocity with them, Just can make up my mind what to try next.

I've heard that your 280 Ackley has about the same power as my 7mm saum. I'm getting good results from 65 grains of Accurate Magpro. Over 3000 fps. with 160AB
H 1000 has always worked well for me, very temp stable but not extra fast velocity.
Ramshot Magnum provides the top velocities in both of my short mags...might work for you.
The Ramshot website lists a top load of 60.3 grains for a 280 Rem with 162 Hornaday: 2797 fps.
You could beat that with the Ackley.
Have not tried Retumbo...
All the usual reloading disclaimers apply.

I haven't worked with the 280ak, but my 6.5-284 maxes out at 2880fps with 53 gr of 4831sc. I can get 2964 with Retumbo with 59 gr., no pressure signs.
Is Ramshot magnum temp sensitive ?

So far in my testing, NO. It is my favorite hunting powder so far.
I hunt elk mostly in the snow. I shoot targets in much nicer weather.

I think both r too slow for that bullet cartridge combo. H4831 should ne the ticket. Don't worry so much about flat primers. That is subjective. Worry about heavy bolt lift, cratering of primer and ejector marks. I will run it on quickload tomorrow and see what it says for pressure. I bet its not as much as u think.

Tried both h1000 and retumbo. Reluctantly I tried rl-17 and its been great. I use 54.8 gr rl-17 in nosler cases and 168 gr bergers for 2870 fps out of my 1-9 twist benchmark 25" barrel. I'm kinda dissapointed in my 280 ai. After 300 test loads im over pushing it that hard. H1000 gave great accuracy but only 2700ish fps. Retumbo was better but I couldn't get it to be consistent since the load was so compressed. If I wasn't targeting bigger stuff I woukd try the 140 gr vld.
When I first built this gun, the barrel was really ruff. Copper fouled really bad. I could not get it to shoot very good. I tried IMR 4831, h4831sc, R22 and R-17 with 139sst and 154sst. I really wanted it to shoot the 139s. They shot the worst. I lapped the barrel and tried a couple of loads with H4831sc. It shot alot better right at 1"with the 154s, then I tried 168VLD and 162 Amax that is when she started to shoot under 1/2". The R-22 shoots good too. I should leave well enough alone but I would like to get a little more velocity if I can. I am going to shoot the Ramshot Mangum today. We will see what happens. If I can't get anymore speed I will just live with it. Accuracy comes first. Speed is just iceing on the cake.

56 gr shows you at 46,000 psi on quickload. Dump some more powder in that case. I wouldn't want to go much over 60 gr according to quickload though. Be careful and work up. This is just some #s based on a computer program. Just watch for the primer to crater around the firing pin, heavy bolt lift and watch for ejector marks on the head stamp of your brass. If you get too much of any of these or all of them you know you are too hot!!
after a lot of shooting with the 168vlds in my 280 AI with a 24" hart barrel i finally gave up on them.
i shoot bergers in my other 2 long range guns with awesome results, but couldn't make it come together with the 280. i switched to 162 amax and instantly starting having a lot better results.
i shoot 59.5 gr of 4831sc with the 162's 50 thousandths off the lands with great results. i also switched to fed215M's from the 210's.
if i had it to do over again i might have gone 7wsm, but i'm warming up to the 280 in the last month since I started shooting the amax's.

The Ramshot Magnum got me velocity. I went all the way to 3000fps with 64.5g before it started to crater the primer and they never did flaten, but the groups started opening up. 63 and 63.5g shot fair, 5 shot group at 100yds, just a little over an inch 1".110 at 2839 and 2894fps average. I took my last 4 shots at 300 yds and the group went 6". Here is a 10 shot group a 300yds. I shot prone, off my back pack the other day with the R-22 load. I think I will go back to the H4831sc, R-22 and up the charge and watch the primers again.

Are I necking up 270 win brass? If u are and the bullet is seated below the neck body junction that donut may be causing u problems.
