Have a January 2012 cow elk hunt. Plan on a LRH with a purpose build LR rifle, NF 2.5-10x32 with NP-R2 reticle pushing the 6.5mm 140 gr Berger Hunting VLD, 1/2 MOA groups, 2920 fps. How far would you push it under ideal conditions? Running 20 deg F, about 24.5 baro, passes 1800 fps about 920 yds.

+ 1 on wild rose's statement. I like to shoot milk jugs under feild conditions for practice. However far I can consistently obliterate them is my limit due to proximity in size to big game vitals

Well reasonably you can figure 2 jugs wide on most Hog/deer larger game, figuring broad side presentation... .

When I was a kid we occasionally had years the watermelons and cantaloupes weren't worth harvesting.... .gun)

Those were the days!

I wonder what they did with all those Rocky Ford poisoned canteloups? Hmmm:D
I could see some real possibilities for "Charity Canteloupe Shoots".

Now if you want to talk about real fun spotlighting coyotes in Watermelon fields at night was a real blast.... .

I even used to get paid for it! gun)

If I got paid to hunt yodel dogs I would be in hog heaven. They dont even put bounties on em around here anymore. I have had some ranchers give me ammo. To bad I hand load

Well on the Llano, coyotes would come in at night and break open the melons for both the food and water. Being coyotes they don't like to stay in one place long so a single yote might break up to a dozen per night.

On years when the price was high, that really added up. I paid for a brand new .17 rem and a nice Leupold Mark 1 16x and all my ammo and gas in two weeks.
