Anyone Shooting the 69gr HPBT-Match

Looking for some field results on these. Shooting them out of my AR15 and wanted to know how they do on fur. Trying to use the bigger (pill) to reach out a bit.

A friend and I shot 2 pups with this bullet two weekends ago. The first one was hit in the guts at about 200 yards and it completely disemboweled him. You could have put a football into the exit wound. It was simply killer and terribly destructive performance.

The second pup was shot around 150 yards in the neck and it dropped him right where he stood. There was no visible exit wound in the offside hide but when we cut his ears off there was massive amounts of internal damage all the way into his brain.

I'm not sure why the shot in the guts split him wide open and the shot through the neck produced no visible exit wound but that's my limited experience with the bullet.

I just ordered 200 of these to try out. I've been shooting a 55gr Vmax for the past 4 years. I'm going to give the 69's a try in my 1:9 twist. I expect them to do pretty well.

I have used them very effectively out of an ar for coyotes. I have never shot smaller dogs but on the adults the damage to pelts has been very minimal. Very good at putting the coyote down right where you hit them.

Sounds good. Hope to get out and try them on some fur myself. First batch didnt shoot very well out of my AR. Was trying Varget but will have to try something else.

I have had good luck with 748. Meters like a champ too.


From what I have seen the 69 grainers work fairly well. As with any bullet, the can blow a good sized hole if you hit bone. Only killed two coyotes with them. Both were DRT.

I have shot all kinds of game with the smk 69 out of a 223 bolt gun. from yote's, deer, hogs, bobcats, even a cow one time. i never had any trouble out of them. i jut have not shot any out my AR 15 i don't like reloading that much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have also shot the 69 Nosler Comp. out of my AR, but my favorite bullet so far has been either the 65 SGK (same jacket as the 69 Sierra) and/or the new Hornady 53 V-Max. The 53 V-Max is a new bullet i only used once last year and the kill was DRT with no exit at 150. The 65 SGK was responsible for these 2 dogs at 557 and 435 2 years ago--

If you can confine your shots at ranges close enough to keep the striking velocity at an 1800 fps minimum, you can put them down pretty hard. The thing about a match bullet is that since it doesn't expand, it wants to up end itself and travel base first once it hits something because most of the weight is in the back of the bullet. if striking speed is high enough, the bullet will break apart as it tries to up end itself. The good thing is it will shred a coyotes insides. The bad thing is you may have some pelt damage.

If the bullet isn't going fast enough to up end itself when it hits something, terminal performance will be kind of weak. In my AR15 I run the 50 grain vmax. In the future I want to try the 53 grain vmax.

So in the end a 69 grain match bullet will work if you know how it does the deed. You just have to be pickier about when you squeeze the trigger.

What I found.

Used the Sierra 52 and 53 grn Matchkings in my bolt action 223 and 22 PPC because they shot well. Performance on coyotes was fine out to around 200 yds or so after that not so good. As an experiment I set out gallon milk jugs filled with water(harder than an animal) at 300 yds. 1st shot nothing happened. 2nd and 3rd the same. I knew I hadn't missed. Walked out and there were 6 nice round holes in jugs with water slowly leaking out. This was with the PPC which is not too far behind a 22-250 velocity wise. Now I use bullets designed for expansion i.e. ballistic tips, heavier V-maxes. ect.. I have some of the Varmint Grenades loaded but haven't shot any coyotes with them yet.

Yes, I just recently shot a big male coyote with a 69 gr. BTHP (ammo is from BVAC out of Montana) out of my AR with a 1/7 rifling. The ammo shoots well but sometimes I experience feeding problems which I don't have with polymer/lead tipped ammo. The yote was quartering to me therefore I hit him in the chest and the bullet blew a fist size hole out just behind his shoulder. The yote ran approx. 70 yrds prior to falling over doa. It was not an ideal shot to determine terminal ballistics! If I can get the pic to attach (Internet is slow where I am currently) it will tell a better story.

The 69gr.Sierra MK is my favorite for coyotes. It shoots great out of my Remengton SPS and so far the damage to pelts has been minimal.
