Im thinking about building a 300 win mag. What barrel length and twist are you guys using for 210 grain bergers? What speeds are you guys getting with the 210 grain bergers and what is your over all length? My mag box on the action I am going to use is 3.610 oal. Will that be long enough? Thanks for any help.

You should be fine. Mine are at 3.550" OAL. They are seated -.040" of the lans. This is with a " Tactical Match" reamer that has a bit longer throat than a std. 300 win reamer.

With a 28" Broughton 5C 1 in10 twist I am getting 2995 MV out of Lapua brass. That is with a Defiance action. My son gets 2916 with a little lesser charge and again a 5C 28" Broughton. This is with H-1000 and Fed 215's under a 210 Berger.

The 300 win is an awesome rifle. I think you will be pleased with what you get.

im hoping to start a build to shortly and was afraid of not being able to achieve 2900 fps with 210 bergers. It seems like a lot of people are so hopefully i can get it

Very doable with H-1000 and a 28" tube. Brass will make a difference too. We get best Velocity from Lapua brass, but it is no longer made. You may give up a little velocity with RWS because is has less case volume and pressure will show up sooner. But we got 2900 from WW brass too. WW just is notquite up to the quality of RWS so the prep on the WW will need ore attention.

Here is a link to what I built. But please note I tossed the Kreiger after 75 rounds and replaced it with a Broughton 5C in the Sendero contour 1 in 10 twist. The first tube just would not cut it as far as accuracy was concerned.

Those shots at the steel at 1000 are with the 5c then? All the dead animals are with what barrel? When did you notice the Kreiger wasn't working out? What was the cause of the problem with the Kreiger? Just really curious as Kreiger is generally a highly regarded accurate barrel.

Tank, Here is the story. I tried to alter my post to change the barrel spec many times. But for some reason ( even though I am logged in) I have no edit button as an option.

First, I have Kreiger barrels that shoot very well. I am of the belief many barrel makers make great barrels. But anyone can make a bad one too.

So here is the deal. As soon as the break in was done I started to fine tune loads. I spent the next 75 rounds doing this. 4 or 5 powders, full rifle inspection of bedding, mounts and even added a 3rd NF ring to make sure all was not moving. Pulled the NXS off my 338 LM and replaced the new NXS I had on the 300. Many seating depths, two different bullets. Nothing made one bit of difference. The rifle was a 1 and 1/2 MOA rifle. Heck every factory Sendero or Accumark I have owned was better than that. All this was also done in NEW Lapua 300 win brass too. I called Kreiger to explain my problem and ask for suggestions and also ask about the possibility of if I should look into a 5 or 6 land barrel to help. They told me that "4 land rifling is just what we do" They had no offers of how to help the issue and said another tube would be 10 to 12 weeks and no offer of a replacment was made. I didn't press the issue as at that point I had no proof yet of what was truely wrong. So I said enough is enough. I called Broughton and ordered the new 5C barrel. When it came in it was installed by the same smith, who did offer to do the replacment work free. I split it with him as I brought the compoenents to him for the build. So I felt it was in no way his fault. I took it home with the new Broughton, broke it in, went back to my go to load with 210 Bergers and the rifle has shot 1/2 moa or better to 1000 yards every since.

So yes, all the steel pics and the game has been taken with the Broughton barrel. I need to change the barrel specs in that thread but will have to get assistance from the mods I guess.

I am not trying to bad mouth Kreiger. That is why I never added this to the build story. I have some of their tubes that are great shooters. But when no hand was extended to help at the time of need with my problem, and after the amount I had spent in the build, ammo time and trouble. I have bought my last Kreiger tube.

Perfectly understandable. Thanks for the explanation. Have you had the old tube inspected to see if there were any deficiencies? Just curious as to what they have found. I am using a Lothar Walther barrel. So far it is better than me, but I'm coming up to its expectations. It has taken a while for the barrel to come in, but man is it on. It has always produced .6 to .5 groups out to 800, but I'm really starting to reign in the accuracy now. I'm a consistent .15-.25 shooter at 100yd right now. I'll be stretching this new load out this weekend. Can't wait. Thank you for your comments.

No, after it was determined it was indeed the tube I was done with it. Didn't even bring it home. I would assume it was a diameter problem inside as nothing showed up with a bore scope. Or it could have been a stress issue in the barrel too. Crown was flawless, also shot it with and with out the brake. It was just a barrel that didn't shoot.

I have had the pleasure of owning some very good barrels over the years. I really like the ones that shoot and are not picky. Like the 2 Broughtons we now have on the 300 wins. They shoot good no matter what, but you can fine tune loads and see a difference. I remember breaking in my sons Broughton. Cleaned every shot for the first 10. They were all shot with the same point of aim at 100 yards. The result was 10 shots into a hole the size of a nickel. Needless to say that is a tube we were in love with from the get go.
