300 RUM and Hybrid 230 gr Bergers

Dang, I was really hoping to build a 300 RUM using these 230 gr bergers with a 26" barrel. I was hoping to get around 3000 fps. Looks like it might be a 28"

I know it's not a 300RUM but Kirby Allen has his 300AX that I think would get you 3000 fps with the 230's in a 26in. tube

We have been running them out of a 30" hart tube at 3050 fps. Accuracy is really good in the 3's. I'll have more leater.

What twist are you running? I'm working up a 208 A-max load in my 26" RUM (1-10"). It is showing promise. I might as well see if the 230's will fly for me. I would be pretty close to my 208 for drop at 1k and both are within a few fps, but with 10% more energy

Im building of a remington 700, since its what I have, and a lot of people really dont like the lapua based cartridges on them. I have talked to a smith and he said its the bolt face really and not the action thats the problem. He said that opening the boltface on a typical bolt becasue of the extractor.. or something like that and that when rem made their lapua they redesigned the bolt. I wonder if I got one of remingtons lapua bolts though...... a 300 lapua improved does sound sexy

I think Pacific Tool and Gauge makes a bolt with the Lapua bolt face for a Remmy 700 if you didn't want to open your's up and have a sako or M16 style installed.

I rechambered a 24" 300 win mag barrel to 300 RUM to try the 230s. My back ordered 8 lbs of RL-33 showed up the same time. I reported on the performance here a while back. I got excellent accuracy with the 230s with a random seating depth set so it would fit and feed from wyatt's mag box in my post 64 model 70. Worked up to over 100 gr of powder in the testing. Backed down to 100 gr for velocity of 2975 fps. Imagine this powder and bullet combo with a 26" or longer barrel!

FYI my testing showed that RL-33 is slower than retumbo. I chose midrange to upper Retumbo loads as starting points in using RL-33. Got significant velocity gains over other powders in a 6mm-284(178 fps gain over max load of Retumbo with 105 berger hybrid, 3485 fps) and 257 Weatherby ( 91 fps gain over max load of RL-25 with 110 accubond, vel 3735 fps)

We are running 91grains of H1000 with the 230, 3.895" oal, CCI 250's and a 26" Hart barrel. 3040 fps shot 2 deer this fall with it. Performance was impressive to say the least.

I read that the 230gr's have been discontinued and I have not been able to find them anywhere. I wrote Berger and I am waiting for a reply. Has anyone heard if they are going to replace them with a different bullet or if they will eventually make them again?

I haven't heard anything about it, but even if I did I would not believe it! :D

That'd be like the guy that killed the gold egg laying hen.

OK, it'd be very hard for me to believe unless there were to be some major fault with
the design which we would know about it by now...
