im new to this forum, but have seen alot of great advice. I have a rem700- blueprinted, keiger barrel in .280AI, jewel trigger, and stock walnut stock glass beded. all was very well- sub 1/2moa groups at 200yds. then I made a big mistake. I was looking to work up loads to 3000fps on 160gr partitions. Not sure what happened, but one round cronyed at 3200fps, i felt powder come back into my face, and the round would not extract. at the powder range I was using- I was shooting 3025fps. I pulled the bolt and had to work on getting the stuck shell out. when it came out the primer pocket was toast (no primer) and a burr was on the end of the bolt. It seems it ripped about 1/4 of the end of the bolt metal- kinda like a hangnail. The burr is still attached, the bolt will close, and it will fire the very low pressure round I tried . The question is: what should I do to fix this. I am considering a new bolt- but am really clueless as to the direction.

We need a picture if you can post it.

I would not shoot it any more until you have let a competent Gun smith look at it.

Blown primers are one thing but a damaged bolt is another thing.

The pictures are good, the bolt needs replacing !

It does not look unsafe but if a case is tight it will finish off the bolt and you will have another
stuck case.

The cause looks like the extractor ripped of the end of the bolt while trying to remove the stuck
case. (So much for weak Remington extractors).

I would recomend replacing the bolt with a new PT&G bolt or a factory replacement.

It will have to be head spaced for sure before it is shot.

The burr is probably brass and could be picked off with a stainless dental pick.

You need to watch much more closely in the future for pressure signs. You probably haven't done any irrepairable harm but you got very lucky.

I had something similar occur with a Model 70 years ago when I made the mistake of taking my handloads which were at or above Max but performed flawlessly in my Ruger number one and fired one in the M-70.

If you have any questions take it to a good gunsmith in your area and let him fix it.

EDTA: I replied to the first post and didn't see JE's or the pictures.

DEFINITELY take his advice and take it to a gunsmith. Time for a new bolt.

The PTG units are nice replacements they come with a speedlock for just over 300 with a remington or sako style extractor, the CEG is also nice for about 260 but you will have to use your firing pin assembly but they have the M16 style pinned extractor which is a definite plus. Good luck.
