Superior Ammunition?

Has anyone heard of "Superior Ammunition" out of Sturgis, SD?

A buddy of mine was telling me he talked to these guys and they do custom ammo. He was also saying that they told him the ammo they would load for him would be more accurate than anything he could handload. In fact they guaranteed it. The website doesn't say anything about an accuracy guarantee but I guess that's what he said.

I was just curious if anyone heard about them? What's their reputation and if you believe the accuracy guarantee?

I'm up for any information on this operation is well. Their web site looks great but I'd sure like to hear some real world experience.

I would have to answer your question this way. The chances of their ammo being accurate in YOUR gun is no different than factory ammo. Without testing YOUR rifle it is impossible for them to even come close to your own custom hand loads . Even if they are using Known OCW loads ( optimal charge weight ) . I think the only accurate claim they could make would be more velocity but that could come at a price also . I have used several custom ammo builders( before I new better) and after spending $ after $ and tons of changes to each load to make them work out of MY rifle I finally gave up and went out and spent 1/2 the amount I spent on their ammo on good reloading equipment and never looked back . There is no doubt these folks do their darndest to make a quality product but quality ammunition can only be accomplished by tuning an individual rifle with an individual load. Could you luck out ? Of course but why spend good money when you can roll your own ?

You make several valid points but I'll throw you a curve. I'm not able to reload for myself, however, I have an excellent load worked up in my seven mag. It shoots a nice half-inch group at 200 yards and we have worked up the ideal overall length, powder charge and primer combination. I love the accuracy and terminal performance of the 168 grain Berger hunting bullet, and this is the combination I will be shooting for that gun.

My friends are not always available to reload for me. I'm looking for a reputable outfit that will take my dummy cartridge and my recipe and crank out a bunch of ammo for me. My situation may change in the future but for now, a company like Superior or someone else could work for me.

I'm open for anyone's positive experiences with custom reloaders; but I agree with you 100% that the load combination needs to be worked out in my rifle.

Anyone out there know anything?

Best ammo is made to suite a particular barrel/chamber with particular components(like powder lot).
Anything else is merely a crapshoot merchandised to the naive.

hnts4fun, and OP,

A blind guarantee of ultra superior ammo from a company is Bull ****. I will call it as I see and know it. I have reloaded for over 20 years now, and I do know of a few "ringer loads" for various calibre's, but even they always benefit from customization to the particular rifle they will be shot in. Always.

As for "But I can Not Reload For MySelf". ********. Go get your self a cheap Lee starter Kit. In fact, for about $80 you can get a powder scale, powder scoups, and the Lee Hand Kit which literally you *HAND* load 1 round at a time. Whole kit fits in a regular cheap toolbox that I keep a little lock on. I use this kit as my Field kit when I am out at the range and I want to try some fine tuning on my loads. Beats the hell out of running all the way back home.

You are right about my request for inputs, I phrased that poorly. I am naïve when it comes to understanding the performance differences between different lots of the same powder. I think I get the picture. My cartridge combination was developed using my rifle. My cartridge and rifle perform extremely well, both at the range and on the cow elk I killed yesterday. I really did think that I could send a list of my components, load data, seating depth, and a loaded round off to a reputable ammo manufacturer company and receive a quality product in return. I had not considered the impact of different powder lots.

It can be implied that they make ammo to the best reloading standards. Better than many mass produced brands. But anyone competent in reloading could boast the same.

For example, I could produce what I'm certain is 'superior' 223 ammo, using the best in components, tricks, tweaks, and technics. And I know it'll shoot in the 2s in my gun, with very low ES. If there were a reloading championship I would enter this stuff!
But in anyone else's gun?
The odds of better performance are really no better than with mass produced ammo..

If I would have only one gun, and I already knew that a lot of certain produced ammo performed well enough in it, and I could buy a barrel's worth of it right up front; I might go that route even though it would be hugely expensive today.
I would be accepting that it's likely not the best, but a convenient compromise brought to my choice through shear luck.
So if that's where you are, and actually can do this, I say go for it.

But put more long guns in the safe, and the choices will immediately favor reloading.
Not just because of cost, but for the low probabilities of meeting expectations with random selections of factory ammo.
Luck is always limited..
