I've wanted a .300 Rum for years. Having a 7mm STW though I really had no justification for getting one however.

Shortly after finding this site I found myself though invited to join some guys on an Elk Hunt next year that for me, if I go, will probably be the, "Hunt of a Lifetime" in some of the wildest and most beautiful country in the US up in Wyoming.

This got me to thinking more about the Rum and I started my search. Folks see me mention the classified section here at LRH as being a great place to "shop" because there are what appear to be some good deals, and occasionally some great deals there.

I've utilized it myself a few times and must say every transaction has been smooth as silk.

Well a while back I notice this Ad.

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f25/nts-remington-sendero-300-rum-gen-i-70549/

More than I could afford at the time, but I thought I'd watch it because it might be a decent starter for a Long Range .300 Rum that I could play with, customize a bit and eventually have a gun I could be confident in at 1000yds or more for that "Once in a lifetime Elk Hunt".

Mountain and I exchanged several PM's, emails and a couple of phone calls and when I had some cash come in I made him an offer. A week later I have it in hand.

To say he understated what the rife actually is in his ad is an understatement in and of itself of colossal magnitude.

To start with it's not a Sendero, it just looks like one. It came directly from the Remington custom shop before they ever made a Sendero. It came with a custom select Krieger barrel that's a slightly larger taper than the Senderos and is their best grade period.

He also told me that he'd once gotten the gun took it to a local gunsmith who is a real craftsman with long range guns and he squared and trued everything, put on a very nice brake, bedded it, and did a trigger job on it.

Well I've shot some of my clients serious custom builds and haven't had my hands on one with better craftsmanship and attention to detail. The trigger on this thing is as nice as anything I've ever pulled at about 1.5lbs and so smooth you feel nothing at all but a little pressure on the trigger finger.

Well I had a box of Remington premier 180 Sciroccos waiting for it and so when I picked it up today I headed out to the pasture to see what it'd do.

Parked the truck, dialed up what I thought would be close to 1080 with a 5mph wind and squared up on my favorite 18" white rock.

slipped one in, settle in on the mirror for a rest and touched it off.

I see my strike about 2x the width of the rock left, and about the same high and adjust.

Slipped in one more, settle in and gave it a squeeze.. . Big splat and white cloud coming from the top left edge of the rock.

Make one more minor adjustment and repeat and watch the center of the rock turn to dust.

Over the next 20 minutes I put the rest of that box of ammo in the same spot.

For a poor boy my new Long Ranger is the stuff of dreams. I haven't' shot anything so nice since I got out of the service and said good bye to my old friends who had served me so well around the world for so long.

The only thing wrong with this rifle is I enjoy shooting it so much It's going to be a real struggle not to flat burn it up just playing with it HA!

I want to thank Mountain and tell all here if he ever has anything else for sale his word isn't just good as gold, it's pure platinum lined with diamonds.

This rifle and I will have a long and prosperous life together... . I'm the first one to admit I've had a lot of just great luck in my life and finding this rifle at this time rates up there with some of my luckiest experiences of my entire life.

Thanks again Mountain.

Thats awesome...hope you don't only get to go on the elk hunt of a lifetime but you get an elk of a lifetime to go with it!
Thanks. The truth is I haven't had an actual vacation since 1978, so even if I don't see an Elk it'll be worth the trip if we get it all together.

If I can manage to get one killed it'll just be the icing on the cake.

Well...you had better post pics if you get one!

What bullet are you gonna load for it? You going to just use factory ammo? Or are you gonna reload for it?

I am very interested in getting a custom 300 RUM for long range shooting probably with a 28 or 30" barrel. Most likely will be used for long range ambushing as they walk across a clearing way out. Will be a ways down the road though. I already have guns that will shoot as far as my abilities will allow me. I need to get a good spotting scope next and a better range finder as my old one doesnt range as far as I can shoot now!

When I get enough brass to do so I'll start loading for it.

As well as these are performing it'll be very hard to beat the performance of the Sciroccos.

I've also got a box of Federal Premiums I'm going to try in the same weight but again, I don't see how I can improve over this a whole lot.

I wasnt' even shooting off of a bench. Just hanging it out the window of the truck using the mirror for a rest... .gun)

As for pictures I will get some but basically it just looks like a Sendero with a Muzzle brake. The things that make it special can't be shown because they are in the craftsman of the man who accurized it.

It's probably next on the list for a paint job though after I finish the .260.

I'm also going to send the scope in for tactical knobs and a TMR or Mil Dot reticle before it meets Mr. Cerakote.

"It came directly from the Remington custom shop before they ever made a Sendero."

Not trying to bust your bubble but the Sendero came out in 94 and the RUM in 99. :)

JohnnyK.

They didn't chamber the Rum in a Sendero for sometime after which is why it came from the custom shop.

MY 7STW came from the custom shop for the same reason.

I meant pictures if you get an elk. You can put the gun in the picture with the elk when you get one :D

Well it's been a week now and I already miss that gun but I still have it's little brother to shoot. It's identical but in 7 RUM and a little more work done to it. Shot it today and I'm still pleased I kept it insted of the 300. I'm glad your happy with it. I wouldn't worry too much about booking an elk hunt. Go bigger. Take it to Alaska and shoot grizzlys. Some may say it's too small but accuracy makes up for that. I also sent the scope box to the dealer. I hope you got that. He didn't know if they would ship it with it. A dot would be nice in that scope. Well stay lucky and shoot straight cause if you miss it's not that guns fault. Ha.

Great story. I hope you get a once in a life time bull on that hunt. I find that 99% of the people on these sites are great humans and like to help out when they can. I really enjoy buying and selling used guns. It allows me to get rid of things I don't need and give the firearm a chance to do what it was intended to do. And you can get some nice deals on hardly used equipment. Not to mention the ability to interact with like minded people.

Wildrose, I would consider trying to load up some rounds using 200+ grain bullets.
