Magpro powder

I tried magpro powder on my wifes 300SAUM and it didn't like it so I got rid of it, now I have a 280AI and I am torn between powders and bullets. Because temps can varry so much here in Idaho I want to stay away from RE22. I have some H4831SC, everyone says thats a good powder for that caliber, but I am curious about magpro powder. I have only shot the gun a couple times and was thinking at first to go with 140gr accubonds, but I was at the gun shop the other day and they had a box of 162gr A-Max and I just had to buy them.
So any advices out there????

I've had really good luck with Ramshots Magnum. I run 67.5 with 162 A-max at 3009 fps, nice little bug hole groups and holds good out to 1450 yrds.

I love Magpro in my 280AI.

64gr behind the 162Amax in Nosler 280AI cases sparked by a WLR gets me an accurate 3050 fps out of my 26" PacNor 3 groove.

Quickload estimates just over 62Kpsi and 3051 fps.

According to Accurate Powder the max load with a 160gr bullet is 65gr of Magpro but I'm calling 64gr max in my rifle.

Magpro has quickly become my favorite powder for suitable cartridges and it is stellar in the 270 Winchester too!

I like those speeds, but how is the stability in colder weather, here in Idaho one day it can be 65 and then the next day we have a foot of snow on the ground.

I'll find out when it gets cold around here.

I'm not concerned if I lose even 100 fps though.

I worked the load up at around 75 degrees so it'll be safe in the winter and the trajectory difference is miniscule at the ranges I'd shoot at.

Where abouts are you at??? guess I best save up my pennies and buy a bottle of magpro and give it a try. I had talked to Aaron Davidson from long range pursuit and he thought I should try 168gr bergers I still like the 162 A-Max bullets more.

I'm in Northern MN so it does indeed get cold at times during hunting season.

That same 64gr load behind the 168VLD nets 3000+ but I haven't worked with them enough to see what's possible.

I'm liking the Amax for sure.

Yes I do believe you have us beat for cold weather. Another good thing going for the A-Max is only 32 bucks a box where its 55 bucks for a box of bergers.

I've had pretty good luck with R-17 in my 280AI with 160gr AB, I started at 53gr worked up to 56gr @3046fps with a Fed 210 primer. In my wifes 280AI,60gr/H-4831sc with 150gr TSX just alittle over 3000fps hers is a Kreiger 25" mine a Lilja.

I've never shot the A-Max but in Hornady manual they list them as max for medium game not sure I'd want to use them on elk. When I first moved to Co back in the 70's I used either the Hornady 154/160gr interlock bullet for elk I was shooting 7Remmag and 7Wby mag back then.

If I were elk hunting I would have no doubts in them. I was shooting a 300RUM before my 280 AI, I set up a 3/8's steel target at 400 yards, it was not the AR500 steel, regular steel, man those 208gr A-Max bullets just drilled right through the plate. I was very impressed with them.
I had heard that the RE powders were not very stable in colder weather. I usually try to stay with hogdon's extreme powder line, but have not see the velocities from them, thou I did see a couple posts with people using H1000 and retumbo. Being disabled makes it kinda hard getting a deer out, not sure I would like to try get an elk out

Sorry I missed the part that you were just looking for a target type bullet. We get pretty cold here I've had R-17 down to minus 19 here hunting elk haven't had a problem with it so far.

Tom I do try to deer hunt, but can only do what my back will allow me to do on any given day. If I can come up with the money to buy a deer tag and a few other little odds and ends I plan on deer hunting and will use the 162gr A-Max. I have no doubt that if a bull elk were standing broadside at 600 yards that the A-Max would dump him and he wouldn't get up. I had heard that they had reworked RE17 and claimed it was more temp stable. Here in Idaho 2 years ago we woke up openning morning to a foot of snow on the gound, needless to say no one knew where to go, no one expected the snow.
