Has anyone worked up loads for a Rem 700 5R .308 with 175gr. I ran some 168gr Amax with 42.5 gr of Varget in Lapua cases and 210 primers. They preformed pretty good but couldnt make hits much past 1050 yards. From what I know the 5R barrels were designed for a 168gr bullet. Any luck with 175 grainers? If so, what is your magic load?

Try 43.5 grs of Varget with an ogive measurement of 2.232". This should be a good strarting point, it was in my 5R gun.

Try different primers, I was amased at the difference it made. So far the CCI BR-2 are showing the best groups, but your gun might like the Federal 210M.

more likely than not, you're going subsonic at that distance. Frankly, I'm surprised that it's working this well for you. Haven't used the Amax 168s much, but the Sierra 168 was originally designed as a 300 meter bullet, and was never intended for longer ranges. It'll work at 600, but it's running out of steam at that point. Most go transonic/subsonic at around the 900 yard mark. I can't picture the Amax as being that much better (a .230 vs a .218 BC) that it'd hang in there at these distances. The 175, on the other hand, was designed specifically to remain supersonic from a 308/7.62x51 at these distances, and with this length barrel. Not at all unreasonable to expect decent 1000 yard performance from that combination. Velocity of the Lake City M118 LR is up a bit over 2600 fps (2580 @ 78 ft), and it has no problems staying supersonic at the 1000 yard mark.
Give it a try, it'll work just fine.

Great point Kevin I was thinking the same thing.
I'm not a Varget fan I know alot of guys are but your going to get more speed out of R15. Berger's 175 has the highest BC and will remain stable through the transonic. But so should the 178g AMAX

He'd mentioned Varget, and I didn't get into powders, but you're right. The RL-15 is the powder currently used by Lake City to load the M118LR ammo. That removes any question about "will it work or not?"!
I get excellent accuracy out of my 5R with 175 SMK's with 42,5g of Varget , Fed March primers , Lapua brass.OAL 2.25".
Thanks for all the help. I just found my dope sheet for the 168 Amax load( 42.5gr Varget and Fed 210 primers, new Lapua brass loaded by a friend). She was pushing 2667 fps. The firing point speed of sound was: 1142.72 fps. The bullet drops sub sonic at 1122 yards. At an altitude of 931 feet humidity was 78%, pressure was 29.53 and temp was 80 degrees. Looks like at 1000 yrds she was at 1240.7 fps with 574.1 ft/lbs dropping -387.16 inches, 37.0 MOA and 1.67 seconds on the time of flight.
Im gonna try some 175 SMKs and some R15 with CCI BR2 primers next and try a ladder test (which Im new to).

I have 24 in 5r that has been cryo dipped. (not sure when it was done if it would help but cold bore shot has almost no shift from normal and it shoots about 100 fps faster than my buddies 5r without). This load for 175's works in both 5r's sub .5 moa. lapua brass neck turned to .014 berger 175 otm or 175 smk. neck sized with a .333 bushing and seated to 2.810. 44 grains of rl 15 over a 210 gold match primer. The berger has a higher bc and chrono's from my ohler at 2720 with 9 for a sd. It stays supersonic to 1200 yards. The smk's will do 1000 but not much more. I have shot the hornady 178 match and its cheaper than the berger and very very close in g7 bc to the berger. It will do 1200 yards also. Steve
My gunsmith laughed at me when I asked him to do it, he called it b.s. after he saw how my gun shot he now recomends it. I just finnished a 5r milspec 300 win mag build with the same thing. Its supposed to align the metal molecules and take any stress out of the barrel from when it was made. I think it cost 50 bucks to have it done by one of the 2 big companies that do it. My 308 has 1000 rounds down the tube and it keeps getting faster. best of luck. I attached a pic of her in her new stock and duracoat.
