Got a new konus m30 4.5-16x40

Well i got a new scope, i see alot of questions out there about the scope so i plan on checkin it out and i will get on here and give it a eval after i get some trigger time behind it. i have it mounted on my rem. 700 build in the 7mm rem mag. with a 20moa egw base and burris extreme tactical rings medium... the mediums set the scope a bit high so i will be changing to low rings here shortly.
The scope is a konus m30 4.5-16x40mm
-30mm tube
-side focus
-ocular focus
-lighted reticle
-comes with caps and sun shade
-1/8th moa adjustment
-locking turrets
-internal level bubble

So far my just from looking at it and messing with it i have a few initial impressions.
1. its a rather heavy scope which isnt necessarily a bad thing.
2. the sunshade is rather long so it makes the scope huge. something i would probably leave off and carry with me and use as its needed rather than leave it on.
3. it has good hard clicks in the turrets.
4. they are a little difficult to get to center up on the hash marks. it has 3 screws to tighten and they have to be tightened in a certain order and evenly to get the hash marks to center up instead of slightly off to one side or the other.
5. Lighted reticle seems to be a pointless add-on. but i think that of any scope, so its a matter of preference.
6. glass is extremely clear
7. glass etched reticle is nice and sharp
8. scope caps are crappy but that can be fixed easy if anyone want covers.
9. variable power is clear all the way to 16x
10. good eye relief
11. even though the scope have a level bubble inside it thats supposed to aide the shooter, i dont really like it. i could do without it. for one i dont use it, two i dont like the way it looks through the view with a bubble in there, and three i dont think its exactly level with the scope and reticle so if you did use it i really wouldnt be accurate. i'll be testing it with a plumb to see how accurate it is.

Over all the scope seems to be well built. i will know more about its performance once i get some trigger time behind it.
im going to test the tracking and the mil measurements to see if and how accurate they are. Manufacturer claims that the mils are calibrated at 12x, i will also be testing that to see if thats accurate. i have heard that this scope is on the first focal plain but i have also heard that its a second focal plain scope. so i'll also be checking to varify which is which.

i'll see about adding some picture so yal can see what it looks like on the rifle.

Ok so I finally got some trigger time with the konus... As originally stated the scope is solidly built.
So here's my final eval.

It's a good scope, especially for under $300. I put it on my 7mag and set zero at 100yds with some proven 150gr federals let the gun set then took a cold bore shot (punched the bull) and then tested some 168gr handloads that kick like a mule. 60 rounds test loads later. I let the gun set then took another file bore shot at the same target with the 150s and I was very pleased with the result... Both cold bore shot almost cut the same hole... So that being said, the scope held up to some stout loads and held zero.

Tracking is good, I didn't measure but just from eye ballin it when I moved it a full moa the bullet moved a full moa and returns to zero.

Glass is nice and clean. On par with my leupold.

I do however have a few minor issues with it that could be better but this is a low budget scope so such things are to be expected.

When the sun is out the shade is a must or everything is hazy. The turrents are a lot harder to zero on the hash marks than they should be. Takes about 10 minutes of work to get them where they need to be.

The quit focus on the ocular does not adjust far enough for me so when I have all the parallax out the target is a touch fuzzy.. the range markings on the knob are not accurate either. At 100yds it'll say about 180ish.

The internal level is a useless add on. Can't see it and its not even level with the crosshairs..


All in all its a good scope, I like it. The dislikes are only a minor inconvenience and can be overlooked and felt with with minimal efforts. If your picky it may not be the scope for you. I will most likely get another one in the future because for $300 its a **** good scope and does what its supposed to. For someone that's on a budget or doesn't wanna drop a grand plus on a scope I would definitely recommend the m30

I have the http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f18/konus-pro-tactical-m30-6-5-25-x-44-30mm-mil-dot-59094/ and I too am very pleased with it, unfortunately I didn't get to add more test/review other than afield - 1 whitetail doe at 338 yards and 1 coyote at 200 yards last year. Got ~80 rounds test on her, mostly 200gr NABs and 208gr A-Max's - so far so good.

Anyways, I tried to resume during off season then I ran into this review ...

Yeah I read that review before I bought mine. He did a good job on that one. I just did this lil review to add another one out there cause when I searched I only found that review and I think one other.

I'm pleased with mine as well, for the price they're about as good as you can get as far as use and features go. My next one might be a swfa 10x ss or the konus again. They're both the same price.

IMHO, you lose clarity and focus adjustment at max power. In my scope, 22X is max power before I lose focus adjustments for the most part. Overall, it's still a good buy.

Yeah I've noticed that too.. if you get the parellax just right its ok but it takes a few seconds so I just leave mine on 12x... But mines a 16x so your loss of picture is probably more extreme at 22x than mine is.
