Limbsaver Barrel Donut

I'm having probs with 3rd shot flyer when using HSM Trophy Gold 168VLD ammo and I ordered one of those Limbsaver vib damper things for the barrel. I havent got it yet, but was wondeirng if I wasted 20.00 or if they really do work. Before I was subjected to Obamanomics and had a job and a good tv package I used to watch Eastmans Hunting Journal a lot and I see Guy Eastman used it all the time on his 30-378 Wby rifle. I was just wondering what other forum members experiences are with it. Thanks.

If it works for you, you did well vs more expensive options. If it didn't you haven't been stung.

I might suggest though trying some different Ammo. I know more than one person who's had the same problem with the same ammo.

Besides being butt ugly they appear to work on some rifles.

The problem that you are having sounds like something else because if it was the harmonics
they would not change on the third shot.

The Donut dampens the barrel harmonics and are supposed to improve the group size.

If the third round allways goes out It could be the barrel heating up or tip pressure changing
with temperature.

I think you need to look at bedding and floating or giving yourself more time between shots.

Previously I was using HSM bulk 140BTSP ammo from Cabela's and frankly was a lot tighter groups at 300 and 425 and a lot cheaper. The 140s are Speer. I just thot I'd try the 168 VLD ammo to see if it was really better and flatter. But so far Im not impressed. Next I also wanna try Hornady Superformance 7mm Rem Mag 140SST as a comparison. One day.

I'm hoping the donut will shrink all my groups, as I shoot often with an Army staff sergeant and his groups with his Wby Vanguard 270 are a lot smaller. But then he's 30 yrs younger.

Give the Winchester Supreme in the 140gr/150gr Ballistic Silver Tips if they still make it.

All three of my 7 mags really ate them up.

Always had great luck with both that and Hornady as far as factory ammo goes.

I have 5 rifles now that like the limbsaver, and 32 that don't see a difference. But, the one's that like it, the group reduction is very noticeable.

Well I think it's working. I didnt shoot any different today when I shot a few rounds with it on and group size is way down at 300y to <1moa (2.5"). This 26 inch barrel may like it, and yes it sure does look weird. I'm going to switch to Hornady Superformance next trip to the range and see if that makes more of a diff also. I'll take the tip from above and try some Silvertip ammo on another trip, as my meagre budget only allows a few boxes of ammo per month. I can see a 1" red bullseye easy at 300y with my 3-9x40 scope and not saying ( I ) could make a 1" group, but by gosh it could be done I think. Wouldnt that be a hoot. For a factory Winchester rifle.

I"m still dropping third shot 6-9" low. Sometimes more. My first two shots are usually < 1moa @ 300y but third shot drops bad. Weird. Maybe it's me or improper sandbagging on the bench. Or maybe it is the ammo. I may need to go back to the HSM bulk 139btsp ammo.

If your first two shots are reasonably accurate & the third is a flier, that normally means heating up is changing the pressures on some part of the action and/or barrel. Start with checking the bedding on your rifle along with the torque of the screws. Fix those issues & you should fix most of the problem.

Met a guy at our range today sighting in his brand new Rem 700 sstl .264 WinMag. Very nice rifle. He too was using HSM Trophy Gold ammo and his targets were virtually same as mine. Third shot dropped way low. So that may be my problem, as I saw another post in this forum about same prob with same ammo.

If your first two shots are consistently tight, then it's not the ammo.

If the initial cold bore POI is consistent each day, then it's not the ammo.

Other ammo may be less affected, but it sounds like heat/expansion is flexing the barrel/reciever.

I agree completely. If the ammunition was inconsistent, it would be inconsistent with a cold barrel. As your issue only appears after a couple of shots, I would bet all the money in my wallet that heat is changing your point of impact, that or you are developing a flinch.

Is your barrel free-floated? Is your action properly bedded with evenly torques action screws? Those are THE questions when POI changes with a warm barrel.
