Necking up 6.5-284 for .284

I'm building a .284 for long range paper punching and general fun. I'm tempted to buy the Lupua brass and neck it up, but I have no experience necking anything up or down. I'll be using Forster Bench rest dies, not bushing dies. Will it be as easy as running it through the die? Will I have to fire form the brass? Should I just stick to the Winchester brass designed for the "straight" .284? Thanks.

The 6.5-284 is .264 bore. To neck up, you will need a .284 expander iron. Lube it and inside of neck liberally. Expand the neck, then size it thru your F/L die. Finally, trim to SAMMI length and fire form. Lapua brass is much better than W=W, so your idea is good.

I am not familiar with the expander ball in Forster Bench Rest Dies, but if it is similar to the hornady expander balls you should be able to run it through the 284 sizing die and you are done.

The new dimension dies from Hornady have a different shaped expander ball that works very good
and can be adjusted through out the entire range of sizes (Small base to neck only and would make
it easy to size the Lapua cases up).

I think you can buy just the sizing die for around $30.00 dollars and make it well worth the money
to keep from ruining that expensive brass.

Then fire form and load with your Forster dies if you have them. Other wise buy a complete set of
the Hornady dies and enjoy.

It will be worth the trouble !!!
