270WSM barrel quest

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would humbly like to ask which barrel do you believe would make for a great long range shooter for 270WSM? When it comes to fps or accuracy, I'll prefer accuracy. As for contour, I really don't mind the weight, whatever makes a barrel more dependable and durable is my preferred choice.

My action is a Remington 700 SPS 270WSM SA and I've decided its time for a build. I am thinking of a Brux barrel and have my sights set on the XLR Industries Evolution Chassis.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I've spent 8+ years in the Marine Corps, and other than sending 5.56 and 7.62 lead down the range, my marksmanship skills are limited. Not to say I am not a mean shot with iron sights I would like to take the knowledge and techniques found in this great community and hopefully hone my skills as a LongRangeHunter

Your already heading in a good direction with the Brux and XLR, I'm liking Brux and I would like to get an XLR for an ULR rifle build in the future. The optimum 270 WSM has been my quest for several years and I think I'm almost dialed in on it.
Here's a possible ideal set up, Brux med palma, 1-9 twist cut at 28in with a three port Muscle Brake.
Look at Matrix Ballistics for 165 and 175 grain VLD's, Berger is good and hopefully Wildcat bullets get their 169.5 soon. Royinidaho is working on a bullet re-tipping solution that looks promising and would be very cost effective BC gains on bullets like the 150 Ballistic tip.
Have the action and mag set up as long as you can so you can seat out the larger VLD's.
If you set it up right you'll be amazed at the range and ease of shooting you get out of it.gun)

I had also thought of a muscle brake as you mentioned, I don't think there's anything wrong with the one Mr Len has on his Gear Shop.

Your barrel recommendation is great! I will order now. I've found the Matrix and Berger companies, but I just can't find any of the Wildcat bullets. [What I found] is that a so-called Richard Graves (here somebody calls him a poacher) is the maker of these Wildcats, and nobody seems to carry them anymore.... unless of course you would know of his website or of a supplier? Royinidaho seems to be quite the character, I found his wordpress journal but that's about it.

Let me know if you know where these Wildcats can be bought, I would like to stay tuned to Royinidaho bullet's development if you could point me in the right direction.

[email protected] Paul sent me some 169.5's a couple months ago so I know he is making them but I think he has been backlogged for a while
My barrel is a custom chamber Rockcreek #4 28" fluted with a small painkiller brake 7mm dakota necked down to .277 40* shoulder about 18 moa @ 1000
with a 290 yard zero Kirby built 700 trued action it shoots real nice

The 270 cal has a strong following, and it's just getting better with the newest bullets!
The Muscle brake Len has is the regular three port and would work excellent, you'll be surprised how sweet it is to shoot, the only reason I used the mini was it blended straight with my barrel, looks built right in but the barrel is obscenely heavy.
You'll have to give some thought to how far out you can seat the bullets in your configuration and have the chamber throat set up accordingly if you want to cycle the long VLDs thought the mag, if you are willing to single sled them I can shoot you the specs in a PM on the reamer I have set up for them.

Roy is our unofficial 270 guru leader and all around good old guy, his entertainment factor is extremely high, he should be popping in one here as I think he can sense when we talk about him

I would also go with the brux,I have to carry mine up big steep mtns so I like the # 4 flutted they shoot great and break in good, I also have a #4 rockceek barrel it shoots fine but they take a long time to get< and I dont think it shoots any better than my brux barrel, as for the action I would go with a long action if you plan to shoot the 165 matrix or the 169.5 wildcats so that you can seat your bullet out far enough to get a max load of powder, just a thought.

a 7mm dakota necked down to .277 sounds like a lot of sense. soudns like big power in a .277 package! Beautiful! I will definitely look into that Rockcreek barrels. It sounds like you have a great shooter!

Mr bigngreen I can't put in words how grateful I am for your help. I am thankful. I think I might have a custom action worked for the 270WSM. I really like the way that short stubby b@st@rd looks like. I would like to pursue this 270WSM cartridge for now.

Gentlemen,

I took time this week to visit my local gunsmiths here in El Paso, Texas. It turns out everybody in towns just has to mention this 'Chuy' master gunsmith; whether gunsmith or not themselves. So I went to him and like most of you recommended, we says my Remington 700 270WSM SA is too short for a 170+ grain .277 bullet... So now I am thinking of I am thinking of contacting Stiller's Precision for this action build, specially since Len uses them for HIS custom rifles.... hehheheh... I will contact Stiller for a custom action that can take a longer-than-usual 270WSM, of course, before that I will speak with Brux and give them a heads up and this project, just to check if they have any feedback themselves.

Here's a little 270 WSM with a 165 Matrix pic for ya. Over all length is 3.120 on but not into the lands. The reamer has .180 free bore. Just fanning the flames

ajacinto, heres another thought for you, I built a 7mm wsm and a 270wsm , both on howa LA as they are a little shorter than a reminton or a stiller I have shot both the 165 matrix and the 169.5 wildcats and both feed nice. With the LA remington that we tried somthimes the loaded case will pop up before chambering this is why I went with the howa LA true them up and they are a sweet action for less $ just a thought good luck on your build

That is an excellent suggestion!!!! We were posting at the same time, I haven't shot anything yet but there is another member I think his username is pitbull320 that has put them or has a buddy that has put them on some big game and performance was excellent. They have the same jacket as the Bergers so I would expect similar results but won't know for a couple months, I plan on shooting most everything with them from antelope to elk. Shooting them into sand at 1000+yrds they seem good, all open up and mushroom way down.

Once again thank you all for your replies. I find myself with a whole lot of options and knowledge I didn't have when I first posted this thread

So a LA on a WSM is available? That just might be the an option I will look into when the time comes. So I decided to take this Remington 700 SPS to my gunsmith and had Leupold scope mounts and rings installed and a scope bore sighted... I took the rifle out to the range and I left the place with mixed feelings!

First off it was great shooting this thing! My only complain is the awful recoil my right shoulder felt. Now I know 270 is not by any means the meanest caliber in the block; but understand I am a disabled war vet here... After three shoulder surgeries (one left two right) I suppose my body is not the same....

Anywho; I just know I can shoot better than what the paper down range was telling! Before I spend more time and money on this rifle (and caliber) I think I should get my hands on lower power rifle and practice practice practice. [by the way I was a shooting a BSA scope which I understand to be a big no-no, will be getting a Bushnell Elite 4200 to temporarily fill in for a better glass in the future]

What caliber would you believe has more to offer; .243 Winchester or .22-250 Remington? Meaning which would allow for more room for experimentation. I notice there are a lot more bullet brands for the .243, but Berger alone has bullets from 30 to 90 grains in .224 lightbulb

I won't be giving up on this 270WSM or the build; but I'll be honest shooting this thing hurts, feels like a small cannon. At least for now it does LOL.... I have hope my shoulders should be better in a few years - I only got one body and I am not about to give up on it!

OK i'll just come out and say it I am a puss when it coms to recoil, I was always against a brake because of the noise but after installing my first one on my 270wsm, I became a believer, a good quality brake would make your 270 wsm's recoil feel about like a 22-250 witout the brake, as for other calibers if you are going to build ,I would go with the 6.5X47 lapua if you put a brake on it it wil feel like your shooting a 223 I have a buddy who killed a 6X7 bull elk at 720 yards with his 6.5X47 with 1 shot and it only went about 30 yards before it killed over, if you want to buy a factory rifle the 260 remington would be a good choice, there are lost of bullet choices in the 6.5 caliber, just to show how much I hate recoil I even put a brake on my 223 akley. good luck
