Someone decide for me please

Since there are so many choices today for factory ammo, I would like someone else to decide what brand for me to use in my rifle. I have a savage rifle in .308 caliber. I will be using it for whitetail mostly, shooting in a range of 100 to 300 yards. I tried sighting in with federal 168 grain at 100 yards and did not get tight enough groups. I want to move up to 180 grain, for better accuracy and terminal ballistics. Anyone have any suggestions? I know the routine (shoot,shoot,shoot) to find what my rifle likes. I am simply trying to find input from others, for a good factory round.

175gr gold medal match ammo, factory Savage rifles either like 168's or 175's

+1 to what Sinarms said. If it wont shoot one of those two loadings, you have other problems you need to investigate.

You guys beat me to it.
Try 168 first, if they don't work try the 175.
If they don't work the only advice I can give you is the same advise I got about my golf game.
Take two weeks off...then quit .LOL.

I already tried the 168 grain, they didn't group like I wanted (I am being picky). I have the 175 right now, just waiting on cooler temps to go out and shoot. I have read here and from other reviews, that is not a bullet to hunt with, only to range shoot with.

I would bet that you'll be fine shooting 175 match bullets at the distances you mention. I don't personally have any experience with 308 match bullets on game, but I've taken alot of game with small caliber match bullets. In my experience, at "normal" distances they have performed well.

The match bullet problem, or used to be anyway, was that match bullets had thicker jackets and the hollow point wasn't a "true" hollow point. They weren't designed to expand on game...........but in my tests, they do expand quite nicely on varmints and deer/antelope when the distances aren't far and the projectile speed is still pretty good.

There are tons of factory offerings in 308, I am sure you'll find something that will shoot good.

Hornady Superformance in 165 SST, 168 A-max/BTHP, 178 A-max/BTHP, Black Hills 155 match.

+1 for Hornady Superperformance 165 SST 's. Would also try Nosler Custon 165 Ballistic Tips. These bullets work great a shorter ranges but will still open up at 500 yards with 308 velocities.
