decided on a 7 r m and berger vld 180 for my lrh project. gonna order a shilen barrell but now the question is which muzzle brake to use and why. there are so many shapes and sizes and different port configurations. new to all of this so any and all info is appreciated

Based on his testing I think I'm going to try the TTI on my 7mm STW.

I have been shooting a 7 w s m a lot lately. it was built by defensive edge and of course it has a defensive edge brake. it's no secret that I'm a big fan of this brake but it really does work. we made great hits the other day out to 1280 yards with this gun and I was really impressed with how little of recoil it had. spotting your own shot was a piece of cake even at the closer ranges. ..:efensive Edge - Custom Gunsmithing::..

Unless you were shooting a cannon almost any break will work.

There are other post that discuss this so I will make it short and you can do a search on breaks.

For looks, I like the breaks that match barrel diameter and have ports all around.

For prone shooting(Muzzle is close to the ground) the large ported breaks work best and are
the most efective at reducing recoil in the prone position.

The most efective of these large ported brakes seem to be the flat ones with longer length
ports (More surface area for the gas to impinge on and direct the gas better) and slightly
backwards angled ports.

Looks play an important part in what a person likes so pick the one you like they all work to
some degree.

My experience with brakes have all been positive from the aspect of reducing recoil. They sure make a magnum fun to shoot. However, I have found breaks like the Vias or Boss style(360 degree hole pattern with many small holes) to be significantly higher pitched and therefore in my experience louder. The larger hole Radial Baffle breaks(Holland, Painkiller, Muscle, defensive edge) have produced great recoil reduction with what seems to be a more moderate sound level. Perhaps this is perceived level, but I know that with the holland's that I do not need to wear double protection(Plugs and Muffs) like I did with the smaller holed designs like the Vias/Boss. I suppose that both have their place, my choice will always be towards the Radial baffle.

I'm a huge fan of the muscle brake. I shoot my 7mmDakota in 1000 yd varmint mathes once a month. 2 weeks ago I shot a 2 day match (100 rounds) and didn't even know I shot a gun. I also shoot this rifle free recoil if that says anything about how much recoil it has. Kevin Cram has one on his 338 cheytac. I shoot that Free recoil also. THe muscle brakes are amazing

I have just purchased one of Kirby Allens Painkillers, havn't had a chance to shoot with it yet, hoping to next weekend, but I will say he is great to deal with and from a visual standpoint the workmanship appears to be top notch. Will post on recoil reduction, back blast and sound levels when I get a chance to.

Called the guy today about the TTI eliminator and it looks like they are having trouble keeping up with orders. He said they currently have over 30 people on a waiting list and couldnt give me a date of when I could expect them to be in. Think I am just going to look into the APS Painkiller

Don't know if you have decided on a brake or not yet but I promised an update in my earlier post so here goes. GET A PAINKILLER I just shot 60 rounds out of a gun that previously I was lucky to get a dozen out of before. It has tamed the recoil on my 358 Norma mag down to being about the same as my 270, I was spotting my own impacts as close as 200 yrds even with really hot hunting rounds. The muzzle blast wasn't noticable by me, there were no other shooters near me so I can't say what it would be like for other shooters on either side. Noise levels weren't really that bad, yes it was louder but not to the point where I thought that I needed to double up on the hearing protection. The only downside I see to it so far is I'm gonna start going through a lot more powder now in this gun, it really has become a dream to shoot. good luck in whatever one you choose

The TTI is probably optimum for smallbore with not too much powder, like the AR round. I'm curious as to how it does with a larger round. Wild Rose, when you get yours please inform as to its performance on your STW. I wonder at what powder charge the SD of the baffles is maxed out and at its limit making larger powder charges pointless. (not sure if those are the correct terms, but you get the idea)
