Looking for some opinions, please help!

Well, Ive been looking around here for a while, and finally decided to join! Lots of good information here, thank you for what you have already taught me.

Now for my dilemna, I am getting more and more into/addicted to long range shooting, and would really like a little advice from everyone here on buying my first rig. I have a few different options in my mind, and please feel free to suggest anything else!

First off, I am looking at buying a stock flatform that is built for long(er) range accuracy. The Savage Long Range Hunter, and the Remington Sendero SFII.

Secondly, I have been looking around for a used set-up, here is one that has really interested me. www.ifish.net I am not sure how much I really want that caliber, but I feel like it is a really good deal, and once the barrel is shot out, I beleive I could buy a new barrel in a 300 win mag or so, and still have an awesome shooting rifle. The owner of this has even showed me his 1000 yard targets. Pretty impressive! The barrel has 550 rounds down the tube, Ive heard the stw usually lasts near 2000?

Finally, I am pretty interested in the 300 win mag because of the readily available brass and info, and reliability of the round. But, there are a lot of awesome used Sendero platforms in 300 RUM.

And to top it off, If I buy a new gun, or a rifle without a scope, I would put a vortex viper PST on it.

Do you have a place to practice?
What is your intended target?
The lowly 223 make the cheapest and best practice.
A mid/big 30cal is a lot of recoil for good practice.

You have not told us if it will be just for target shooting or hunting long range. You have not told us what are his group sizes on those 1,000 yd targets. Since you are new to long range shooting his targets may be impressive to you, but not us???

I have been shooting a 6-24 PST FFP MOA scope at 1,000 yds and have shot a 8+1/8" 5 shot group and don't consider that very good. I am changing to another scope with much finer cross hairs so I can hold more consistent in the center of the target. I'm hoping this will get my groups down to about 4 inches.

I shoot a 6mm Norma BR. with 105 gr. Berger Hunting Match VLDs. I've gotten my 5 shot groups down way under 1/2" at 200 yds. which should get me down to 4 inches at 1,000 I hope.

PS: The STW is one hell of a good caliber by the way.

Buy a 300 Win Mag. If for hunting put a 4-16 PST on it. If more for target use the 6-24. Go shoot the crap out of it....

I own a 223, 270, and also a 30-30 and a 45-70.

The 223 is a sweet shooter with the 55 grain FMJs from black hills, resting off my truck I got a 3/8" group. I am just getting into hand loading.

The 270 is a Remington 700 ADL that I have considered building rather than buying a whole new set up, but am not sure if it has the umph to kill elk at extended ranges. Or if it would be more worth it to keep the gun as a closer range gun and start over for a longer range gun.

I do have a place to practice, and would be practicing about once a week. The rifle would be used for deer sized game, and elk as well. I plan on putting a brake on the rifle, unless I buy one that already has a break, and putting on some ear plugs under the ear muffs for a little extra protection.

As for the STW he showed me a 1'x2' target with 16 hits on it, and I was impressed. But it looks like you guys are able to do a bit better!

There is a lot to be said for the long range capability of the 300wm. Hornady has a new 225gr bullet out for it that has a doppler measured G7 B.C. of .336. It packs a solid whallup WAY out there. Dave Tooley seems to have a lot of really solid information on it. Load it up with H1000 and away you go.

That savage LRH looks pretty good.

By the way, even with a good muzzle brake, a heavy bullet 300wm full house load will still let you know you just squeezed one off. In all honesty...especially if i were going to shoot prone, and off of a bi-pod, I would make sure my rifle weight was at least 16lbs, with a nice long HEAVY barrel. Think #7 or there abouts @ 26" or even 28".

I guess what I am trying to say, you might want to build one, instead of grabbing one off the shelf. For instance, Stock Fit and Length of Pull, cheek weld for the scope setup you will run all make a HUGE difference in true long range shooting. If you are getting beat bloody, you will likely not do your best.

The good news is, there are some really great smiths, and Long Range shooters on this board. Maybe 1 or 2 of them will jump in and offer up some solid advice.

You might do real well to look at the classifide section here at LRH.

There are some very nice 300WM's and 7STW's listed right now at very reasonable prices.

For what you are planning to do either would be great setup's. Heck even the 7mag or 264WM are adequate for anything you'd want to shoot out to 800yds.

you do not say where you are . you are in mont/idaho/wyo where you hunt elk a lot?? either get a sendero (7mm rm or 300 wm) or build off your .270 . 450 for a barrel 200 for a stock. if you get the savage you will have the problems BML is having.
