I am thinking about a 6.5 build, either a 6.5 weatherby magnum, 6.5-284 Norma, or 6.5 creed
I am leaning towards the 6.5 weatherby as it is pushing the new berger 140gr at 3300fps with BC of 612, but the 6.5 norma is intersting and little cheaper to shoot.........thoughts??

I want a 6.5 for pronghorn antelope, deer, possibley mtn goat and maybe the sheep. capable of 500-600 yards if everything is right. available ammo versus home grown not an issue so basically wanted to know which version of the 6.5 will give me the best use. Personally the 6.5 creedmore is ok wth 120GMX, if I have to handload for 130 or 140 grain then I will step up to the Norma or Weatherby

I have a 6.5wby. Most accurate rifle I have ever seen as Mcwhorters has a reamer that is throated for the Berger Bullets and eliminates the freebore. It is a REAL hammer on whitetails!

You're skipping the .260 Rem which lies between the Creedmore and the others.

Of all of them it is the cheapest to shoot, and you can still push 140's out to around 2850fps with a 24-26" barrel.

.260's have been proving to be extremely competitive the last few years in various long range and sniper competitions as well.

For that game at your intended ranges I dont see a need for a magnum the Creedmore or the 260 remington is more than enough power.
No one has mentioned the 6.5x55 Swede which will shoot along side or faster than the .260 with handloads and Ackleyized will shoot along with the 6.5/.284 with out the feed problems of the rebated rim.

I shoot a 6.5 gibbs, a modified 270 case will run a 140 3160 fps from a 28" barrel loaded mildly, have ran mine out to 1060 yards , and barrel life will be somewhere around 2500 rounds.

I thought of it as well as even the 6.5 jap but when he mentioned "cheaper to shoot".. I discounted it.

I have a McWhorter 300wsm and they loaded me 300 rounds of 180gr TTSX, super accurate.

They are who I would have build my Weatherby, they have taken lots of game with the 140 gr Berger.............

Nothing wrong with the 260, just doesnt do anything for me, I would go with the Norma first.............The creedmore maybe in a Ruger No 1 for stalking goats.

If your gonna reload, the 6.5-06 would be better for a repeater then 6.5-284. I would also look into a 6.5-06 AI, 6.5 STW, 6.5 WSM, 264 and the 6.5 Rem Mag. all great rounds, just pick your poison since they will all do what your asking of it.

not sure if your leaning towards the 6.5/.270mag version or the 6.5/.300 mag design, but the 6.5/.270mag case will push a bullet right at 3300fps with a lot less powder than the .300mag case. I push 140 grain bullets at 3300 fps in my 270 mag (pretty hot!). Might also look at the 6.5-06AI, as this round really gets it done
