Muzzle Break Choice

There are hundreds if not thousands of muzzle break choices. How can one tell which muzzle break is the most effective (read that as reducing recoil the most)? I'm sure they all work to some extent but which one does the best job of recoil reduction?

Basically, the large ported brakes reduce recoil the best. Some claim 50%or more.

The brakes with round holes and chambers are in the middle.

And the ones with a straight bore and round holes are the least effective.

The total difference is from 30% (The least) to 50%+ (max) so depending on the caliber
and bullet weight they are all effective.

If you want to tame a 308 any break will work, But if you have a beast you may want to
consider one of the ported breaks.

PS: Flash hiders offer very little reduction in recoil.

So a lot of the selection depends on likes and dislikes and installation.(Some breaks have to
be timed driving the cost up.

I would recomend one best if there was one, but there are 5 or 6 made by sponsors on this
web site that are excellent.

I have a Muscle brake from Center Shot Rifles (Pittsville, WI) it is the 3 muscle brake with top porting. I have it mounted on my 338 Lapua shooting 300gr. SMK's loaded hot. Here is a video I took of it. Notice there is no muzzle rise. It just kinda slides back and a lot of times I never loose my sight picture. Click on the picture to see the video!

My dad had Jim install a muscle break where he used to have a JP break on his 338wsm pistol. The JP looks mean, but the muscle break is A LOT more efficient...

Great video, Tikkamike! It looks like the rifle jumped back about 1" to 1.5". Pretty impressive. What does the recoil feel like? Maybe a .243? .270?

To be honest I dont really know how to explain it because its different, it just slides straight back doesnt buck up at all. But I would compare it closely to a 243 but probably less. The thing is a peasure to shoot. My little sister insists on shooting ALL of her animals with that rifle because its so fun to shoot. my next brake will be another one of them!

A few of the ported brakes are the Holland,Defensive Edge,Muscle brake, Painkiller and others.

Look them up on this site and if you log on Midways site they have many to chose from.
