hi guys ! my boy and i drew our first elk tags in utah . what is a good pack i was looking at the alps commander.

I use an Eberlestock J34 and love it! It lets me hike with my gun in my backpack up the mountain in the dark and then expands big enough to get half a quartered elk out in one trip. My knees felt that load the next day but my back and shoulders were fine. They are awesome packs.

They are internal frame packs. I know some people are hesitant to try and load them that heavy but with a hind quarter, front quarter, both backstraps and tenderloins, plus my gun and 2 liters of water the pack held the load like a dream.

Here's a link to their site
J34 "Just One" Backpack

If you want to buy one talk to Ceylon at Deltaoutdoorsman.com I believe he's a sponsor on this forum and he had the best prices when i bought mine.

I use an Eberlestock gunslinger as well. Big enough for an elk hind quarter. I usually have a frame pack in the truck or at camp if I need it. The Just one's are great packs also. Eberlestocks are hard to beat if your hauling a rilfe. The gunslinger will hold a "taller" rifle (big scope bipod, or AR). I have never wished I could pack more into my gunslinger.

so i take it you guys do not like the external packs the alps commander seemed like a good deal. thanks i'll keep looking

I much prefer the external pack frames for hauling out meat over the internal frames. We hunt with a small day pack with the essentials and then go back in with the pack frames to haul the meat out. Two guys can get out an average elk in one trip if you de-bone it.

I really like the eberlestock X2 I use it for my day pack and it has an internal frame, super nice to carry all day and when you get an elk down it is more than capable of packing out a quarter, then when I get to my truck I grab my external frame pack for the rest of the trips

I use a mystery ranch crew cab and really like it. It will haul more than I care to put in it and with the NICE frame you can buy different bags for it as well. Packs are like everything else in my opinion you can never have too many.

I agree with bigngreen. I like an external frame for packing out elk. Use a blackcreek and badlands for everything else. I really like the Cabelas Alaskan guide. Have hauled out many elk with it. Its a great pack.

I have both a Mystery Ranch CC and a Eberlestock X2. Tried most of them and these are the two I ended up with.
