Hi all just purchased an accumark in 30-378 and sticking a new barrel on for some long range hog and deer busting.

Any sugguestions on optimum barrel length for this CAL? and what sort of twist would i be needing to shoot say 168-200 slugs.

any feedback is good feedback

i was after a 338am.. but now the 375 is out il sit on that for a while

30" with a 10" twist will run to potential. Wouldn't go much shorter in order to burn all that powder.

Mine has a 29 3/8" (30" blank) and it about all you need unless you are going for max velocity
then a 32" to 34" is nessary with huge doses of 50 BMG.

thx lads 32-34 inch adds about what 100fps?
also what sort of freebore do u have on your guns? as the wby factory free bore is huge.

I was told by GS custom bullets that u would need a 1-9 for the monlithic 160 -177 and a 1-8 for there 198 grners bullets. But if they didnt work out, what bullets would u use?? Then Berger quote for the 185 VLD a 1-12 NOW i am scratching my head. MAybe i will use a slingshot instead and wont worry about a twist.

I added 30" 10twist Lilja (at his recommendatio) to mine and get regular 6-7 inch groups at 1000 yes but found 240smk was more accurate than 175 200 and 210s

Thanks for the input, now powders, what do u use ? we have over here ADI (slowest)
2225 ,2218 , 2217 and 2213SC and RL25 etc. and Viht powders thats it.

Mine has the standard Weatherby free bore because I intended to load close to 100% case
density for max velocity.

Accuracy is .093 5 shot 100 yard groups. and velocity is off the charts with a 200 grain bullet and
126 grains of powder. (I don't want to give the load in fear that someone will try it in a rifle with
little or no free bore)

One of the members signature is "I DONT FEAR FREEBORE'' and I feel the same. and with a few
special chamber dimensions accuracy is not a problem.

Note; If you chamber the big 30 with little or no free bore you won't be able to use factory ammo
and velocity will suffer because you cant load as hard .(The reason for going to the big Weatherby
in the first place.

I agree you did your research I replaced my bbl and have this in a Shilen air bbl
Over factory it's night and day.
Powder is the key , low and slow but drop tube to pack it in.
Love H870 if you can find it or stock piled before. Use 129 gr but work up to that
The only close I found is Vit. V n570 works for accuracy and speed working up loads .
30-378 has been around a long time and still the best in the game.
Long range flat is simple amount of powder ? Who has the largest case , don't read factory or reloading manuals you are pioneering work up a load .
Bbl length cheats formula as slow powders burn down the bore. But matching bbl length to powder and bullet is range time .
Still 30 bbl and case capacity , so 30-378 wins
I've gotten 180 gr at 4000 fps FYI
