I was out on a pd shoot and I came across this case. It's quite a bit bigger than the 22-250 case with a sharper shoulder I'm gonna guess somewhere around ( 35-40deg ). The case is stamped LC 67 across the top and NM on the bottom.
The diameter is .224"

overall case length: 2.01"
base to shoulder: 1.67"
base to neck: 1.75"
shoulder dia: .465"
base of hull dia: .472"
rim dia: .469"

This case has very little taper and is .11" longer than the 22-250. I'm just curious to find out what this case may be. It seems to definately be a wildcat to me, and I would like to know if anyone has some info they can share on this mystery case.

Thanks

Sounds like a 22-243 of some sort formed from old LC Military brass (.308)

Best guess...

might be a .224 Vias. George pushed the shoulder back and ran a 35 degree angle. He actually built two or three different versions, and remember that one was a little shorter than the other.

Ya I don't know about the 22-243. I would think it would be much longer than the 22-250. This case is only about .110" longer than a 22-250. I've not yet heard of the .224 vias. Is there anywhere I could find more info on this round? Idk

The head stamp on the brass is LC 67 NM which is "Lake City 67 National Match" = .308 parent. the .243 also starts with a .308 parent. The standard SAMMI specs for the .308 are below, very close to your case which we know was a .308 at one time.

.308 case info
Case type Rimless, Bottleneck
Bullet diameter 0.308 in (7.8 mm)
Neck diameter 0.3433 in (8.72 mm)
Shoulder diameter 0.4539 in (11.53 mm)
Base diameter 0.4709 in (11.96 mm)
Rim diameter 0.4728 in (12.01 mm)
Rim thickness 0.0539 in (1.37 mm)
Case length 2.015 (51.18 mm)
Overall length 2.800 (71.12 mm)
Case capacity 56 gr H2O (3.64 cm³)

It could be a .224 Vias, but based on how rare that round is I would lean more towards a 22-243 middlestead since it has a 30 degree shoulder or a .22 cheetah which is based of the middlestead with a 40 degree shoulder or maybe just a 22-243 since that round also has a 40 degree shoulder So with out seeing the case I would say this is a very well educated guess based on the info you have supplied.

Ill have to agree with you both. I'm seeing a very close similarity in the dimentions. I believe you fellas narrowed it down. It looks as though the shoulder resembles an Ackley shoulder. I wish I knew how to upload photos so I can post a photo comparing the two. I'll see if I can work on that.

Precision Shooting did some stuff on the 6mm and .224 Vias a few years back. Seems they even published the reamer drawings. The Vias is the fastest 22 center fire out there, and will push an 80 grain bullets faster than a Swift can push a 50 grain bullet

a Jaybird has a 1.55" shoulder while a MK.II Cheetah has a 1.605 shoulder. If memory serves me right the Vias starts out with a 6.5x55 case. Shoved the shoulder back about .04" for a 1.670" number. Case length I can't say for sure, but looking at the stack up again I think it's something else yet. Maybe a .224 Badger?

Do a search on this site. There are instructions on how to upload photos. you will need a photobucket account (free)

just dug out my Hogdons manual, and the shoulder is over .70" too short. But of course the gunsmith might have just ran the reamer in deep on purpose. Sounds like a Jaybird reamed deep

You are right. I thought it was 1.675 but after looking it up it is 1.605 just like you said.

Must have had a brain fart (Old timers are subject to that every now and then) Ha Ha.

There are a lot of 22 wildcats out there and It could be anything even a custom wild cat.

honestly there are so many numbers and case designs that's it's really hard to keep track of them. I think everything is right for a .224 Vias except the overall length. Looks like it would need to be at least 2.06" in the top of my head.
