New coyote hunter question

Guys, will be hunting coyotes for the first time in the next month or so, nuisance dogs.

What do I do with the carcass?

What do "you" do with the carcasses?

You could cook and eat 'em,
Cook 'em and feed 'em to the dog,
Grind 'em into a meal for feeding the dog,
Put 'em on your buddy's porch........

OR

do as I do and leave 'em where they fall. Hides aren't any good this time of year.

Throw em some where so no one will see them. I drag mine to edge of property or to truck and toss em in a ditch.

So while on the topic, when are the skins good, and do people buy them or take them? I can't think of anything I would want them for.

Depending where you are, hides start getting good after halloween and end when they start shedding/rubbing towards Feb.

Search for the thread showing how to skin 'em with compressed air. I'm gonna give it a try. Then have a coat/vest/jacket made of the hides.

They hides aren't worth much. Plus the things stink pretty bad. Need a cork or something for their butt.

I just leave they where they lie...usually. I do have one hunting buddy I go with who's neighbor will tan/trade them when they're good and my buddy will take them good ones.

outer space- i have skinned a lot. when the hides were worth more. not an easy chore. try skinning a couple you will get better/faster too. where are you hunting coyotes?

I usually just cut the head off and keep the skull. But im weird and I like to collect skulls?.. is that weird... anyone? Help me...

Many of them have mange around here. I won't touch them. I sell the fur off the nice ones. As others have said it is not a fun job skinning them especially when the guts are ruptured (they really stink then). If you stretch and dry the hides you can send them to the auctions in Canada. I have gotten far better prices there than from any of the local fur buyers. As much as three times as much. Don't bother sending them unless they are very nice though, as poor ones wont sell at all. Western coyotes are worth more than eastern coyotes. I throw the carcass in the woods. My dog won't touch a coyote carcass and he likes raccoon, muskrats, and almost any other meat I give him.

Hey outerspace, when I lived in Western Oregon the 'valley dogs' were a sorry bunch indeed. Also hunted the Cascade foothills above Lyons and the dogs were much larger and better furred. Moved to Bend but quit hunting dogs for fur when the price dropped to $15.00 - 25.00 a hide. The fur market economy has picked up due to Chinese and Japanese interest and our Alaskan 'yotes are bringing in $40.00 to $75.00 for the prime big boys. Have mine skinned by the local buyer/taxidermist and he pays about half the market value but does 100 percent of the work. We are both happy campers and I get my gas and ammo plus a few more toys for boys out of it. Here the bears, wolves and other coyotes take care of the carcasses. No buzzards and few worms but lots of other meat eaters always looking for a meal. Just drop them off out of sight of the roads. Welcome to the sport and have a good shoot. Keep your powder dry.
