remington 700 upgrade

I am new to long range shooting and hunting after years of shooting M-16 for the Army. I am currently looking at the purchase of a Remington 700 308 rifle. I
am still researching the model SPS, LTR, or VTR. I am interested in
the M40 A3C upgrade kit after seeing a weapon advertised with this
upgrade. Does the kit fit all models of the REM 700?I cannot find it anywhere with a price. I can only find it on a current rifle; what does it
cost? I am wanting to get this upgrade as well as a muzzle brake
installed when I buy. If you have any information that could help or a
website that can answer these questions, it would be deeply
appreciated.

the M40 A3C upgrade kit is a bottom metal kit meant to be added to the sps tactical. It allows you to use the AI 10rd mags. I'm not sure, but it should fit all 700s with the std floorplate design.

how far and what are you shooting at? what scope? do you reload? i would get a rem action, krieger barrel and the stock you are talking about. not a factory rifle.

I would also seriously research and consider a 7-08 or preferably a 260 instead of the 308 unless you plan to shoot in competitions which requires a 308 caliber.

The SPS is a nice cheap way to get in to a 700. The stock is junk and you'll be replacing it sooner or later but as a starter rifle they are great. I have the standard SPS in .308 and right now it is my favorite gun. The bead blasted finish is nice to my eye and is better than a cheap blueing job that easily shows rust, etc. The great thing about any Remington 700 is the amount of aftermarket parts available. As long as you pick the proper Short or Long action version of a product it should fit on your rifle.

I can' t buy until my deployment is done so I have alot of time to look. I saw one forum that suggests that the 26 inch barrel on the varmint model is not necessary for the 308 and is counterproductive. The guy went on to suggest the Tactical models with a 20 inch barrel. Any comments? Also, I was wanting to increase the round carrying capabilities. Is one maker of the magazine upgrade better than another?

blw- what are you shooting at? elk? deer ? foxes? how far? i prefer a 26 inch barrel. if you are shooting long range the shorter barrel does not have the velocity of a longer barrel. your drop is more your windage is more.

Also look into a savage the make a darn nice shooter out of the box. If you are planning a custom though remy all the way.

I don't agree with this in fact I'd say anything over 20" in a .308 is useless. The powder is done burning after 18 inches, add another 2 to stabilize the round.

I think if you went out and bought a 20 round box of .308 and ran ten of each down a 20 and 26 inch tube over a chrono you would be very surprised. Have a +/- factor of about 100 fps because some tubes shoot fast and others don't.

If you plan on hunting big game out to 800+yds, the 308 is out. The 7mmMag, 300WinMag for example provide increased velocity, energy, stability, and accuracy with less wind effects. A few of my rifles have muzzlebreaks. They work, but their load. Save your money don't install one. It isn't needed unless the recoil effects your follow thru.

Buy a rack grade Rem700, spend $500.00 on an accuracy tune of the action, barrel and glass bedding. Install a one piece 20 degree base and quality rings. The H&S Precision stock with aluminum bedding block will do. Just send your rifle to a quality gunsmith. For about $1100,00 total you'll have a great shooting rifle.
Buy a Nightforce NXS 5x22x56 scope and you have a fine long range rifle.

Since your still on active duty save your money and buy the rifle first. Try gunbroker.com and find the rifle you want. Later have it tuned. Buy the bases and scope.

I have this performed on all my hunting rifles. They are all rack grade rifles. Some are rifles I've bought from private party. Only one rifle required a new barrel and I had a kreiger installed.


Accuracy Package:
True Action, Polish bolt raceway, square receiver face, square receiver lugs, re-cut threads with single point tool, polish feed ramp, re-drill and tap thread scope base holes to 8-40, square bolt face, lugs, and lap lugs to receiver, install sako extractor, tune trigger to 2.5lbs, correct head space to minimum spec's, provide lead angle into throat for improved bullet run-out and AOL, recess barrel crown and provide 11 degree match crown, cut and true, recoil lug, glass and pillar bed stock with deavcon and marinetex stock, install pachmeyer recoil pad, epoxy sling swivel mounts to stock, install scope base and pin to receiver, lap scope rings.

Note: Base and rings are LE/Mil Tactical heavy duty and rings can be adjusted for left/right windage during initial installation. This function allows you to maintain mechanical zero of your scope. Fine tuning at the range without using up valuable windage moa. The rings are mounted with alignment post and serial numbered.

There is a lot of mis-truth about barrel length and velocity. There is a point of diminishing returns of course especially for cartridges like the .308. With every load I have created or factory purchase loads you will gain an increase in velocity with a 26 inch barrel over a 20 inch in this cartridge. I have Remy .308s in 20 and 26 my 26 inch consistently runs 160 to 180 fps faster same load (168 SMK), not as much as one would expect but an improvement none the less. That improvement counts. Any of the Remy's or as suggested a Savage with the H S stock would be a great platform, you may need to do little to nothing.

I agree with your findings. I built a 308 on a Mauser 98 action. Barrel length with muzzle break 21". I use this rifle for tactical matches out to 900 yds. It's compact, mounts well, and accuracy is excellent. Deer hunting success out to 600yds has accounted for several nice deer.
