What is a good set up for case trimming & neck turning

I was doing a little reading over on AccurateShooter and came across a system that seems pretty functional in terms of a lath, case trimmer, and neck turner...I think it also had a concentricity guage and who knows what else (I don't have the page infront of me at the moment)

But it was very pricey (several hundred) for the whole set up and all the different parts.

Could anyone recommend a competition worthy alternative to this set up that would be easy to use, but at a lower cost?

Which machine are you talking about ? Your description could fit anything from 10" or larger lathe to hand held 12v screwdriver. A "machine" that can act as a lathe/trimmer/neck turner/concentricity gage/ and "whole set" at "couple" hundred seems like a bargain if it's accurate.

I'm using Forster Original Case trimmer, you can buy one at Midway for 60 bucks. Then you can buy addons like neck turner and neck reamer... The only drawback are long cases like from 270 win, I have to do research how to use it for neck turning, trimming and reaming works perfectly, so its limited in my cases to 308 and 223 brass. It looks like I got wrong model, Forster also makes Classic Case Trimmer for long cases...

Jinx, I am also using the Foster Original Case Trimmer - it is an excellent choice. At the bottom of the main bearings there is two settings for the bearing screws. For .270 you should fit the bearings at the outmost position. This will give +-1-2 cm clearence from the cutter unit to the case mounth.

I was looking at the same thing you are talking about (21st century) it looks like a nice system. I was also concerned about the cost. I'm new to turning necks myself .It looks like nobody here uses this system so i'm still looking don't want to be the ginny pig,you know....

I disagree.

I have had a Forster trimmer with neck turner for years, and never did like it. Found that the Wilson is a much better trimmer - more accurate and makes clean cuts. But, the Wilson is not cheap with all the case holders needed for various calibers.

The Forster neck turning unit is difficult to set up, and the cut across the neck is very rough. I use it only when I need to take more than .0008 or so off the neck initially to get down to where I want it. After I run it down that far, and want to go another .0003 or so, I use a K&M neck turner, which is excellent.

i have bought a wilson turner (used I cant find these new from Wilson). is there any where that I can get instructions or pictures of how everything works ? Also where can I get mandrels for it It came with .22 & 6mm I need 6.5mm & .308 . The only case holder I have is 6.5mm . I don't know why the guy I bought this from sent mixed stuff ,but what It's what I have. Any info. would be helpful I could send pictures if anyone is interested in helping.

sinclair carries the wilson trimmers and an assortment of accessories for them.

To my knowledge, LE Wilson does not produce a neck turner. They do make a neck reamer. Is that what you have??? Russ Haydon carries a lot of their supplies. Check it out here:

I use a Wilson trimmer, and for anything I want it's perfect. But the Wilson trimmer will not turn necks. They make (or made) a similar one that turned necks. Never owned one, so can't comment on how well they work. The K&M is a very good neck turner if you need one

It also came with trimmer attachment and inside chamfer tool . and other parts un-known .wouldn't you know I would buy a dinosaur. still no one has used this 21st century turning lathe? you can go to accurateshooter.com they have a product review and video. looks really nice and simple to use .i like simple.....

........ WOW!!! Are you serious about the 0.0008 and 0.0003 readings???? I would think that anything less that one-thousandth of an inch would be mighty nit-picky...... Are you sure you don't mean eight-thousandths and three thousandths instead of eight and three ten-thousandths???

Either you have a neck turner that will adjust only a thousandaths at a time, or you don't understand the turning process. Example: Say a .308 case has a neck wall thickness of .014". Bear this in mind that that is the thickness only of the neck wall, so that if you remove .001", the full 360 degree circumference will be reduced double that, or .002". If you remove .008", it would double that, or completely eliminate any evidence of the neck!!!


The K&M will remove .0002" (two ten thousandaths) from the neck surface at a time, reducing the total neck diameter .0004" with each turn. You need a neck wall thickness micrometer or tubing micrometer to measure this.

You can confirm this by looking at the Sinclair NT4000 neck turner. The cutter adjusts to .0002" and .00025" per click. The K&M is similar.
