I'm shooting sierra and hornady 250gr OTM bullets from a .338 RUM. My local range that I use 90% of the time only goes out to 500yrds and I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time expecting to see a benefit at that range. 2nd question. Will uniforming the meplets increase the ability of the bullet to expand at long range? The SMK has a pretty small meplet and by trimming them they do open up a little more. Any thoughts would be nice. I'm expecting shots on deer or antelope no further than 850yrds.

Roy,

Have you harvested any game with the pointed version? I would like to know how "pointing" effects terminal ballistics, my first observation tends to lean toward penciling, or less than nominal expansion?

No.....but

I did terminal testing on the concept on some original 252 grain Wildcats.

Some were before Richard Graves put the point on them very similar to what is shot in the bullet pointer pics. Some were before the point.

Both point types performed the same as far as I could tell.

I have no reservations regarding any change in terminal performance of the SMK when repointed. A slight meplat trimming wouldn't hurt anything either with out repointing. The bc loss is very slight.

Repeatible accuracy is the important thing. I'm going to do some very long range testing with 350 SMKs in a 375 AM to experience the trajectory consistency between untrimmed, meplate slightly uniformed and repointed. I'll do terminal testing also. That will be in 2012 though......

If you want the SMK's to expand a little better, drill out the tip 1/2 the meplat diameter and fill with silicon.....Rich
