Remington model 30-s douglas barrel in 22-250, need advise...
I sent a remington action and barrel in to be powdercoated. Now it looks as if the powdercoating was done without plugging the barrel muzzle or chamber. I can look in the barrel and see the start of some of the lands but the grooves looks like a potting bed. Is my barrel ruined? Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Respectfully,

Who would have thought that the action (where the bolt rides) chamber and muzzle wouldn't have been protected/plugged.

Powder coating is not a precise process in my opinion. Great for auto parts etc and even rifle exterior metal part.

I have ideas of what I would try after having a heart to heart with the powder coating service provider provided no recourse.

Maybe an old salt such as J E Custom will chime in.

Try a heavy cleaning with a bore brush and bore solvent and then if it looks like most of it is
gone shoot some starting loads through it. it won't stay there under that kind of pressure.

PO Ackley did some test with larger bullets (I would not recommend this) and even fired an
8mm bullet in a 30/06 with out any problem (The bullet was extruded longer)When recovered
so after removing all you can just shoot it.

It also might be a good place to use a FEW Tubs Fire lapping bullets.

Just a few recomendations from an (OLD SALT) Ha. Ha.

Thank you.... JE Custom, I'll give it a shot... so to speak.
Have a great day.

If this was done by a powdercoating service to one of my customs... I'd have a few things to say to them right now...

JB or Iosso should take it out. Follow directions and if you know anyone with a bore scope borroe it. If you were in the DFW area I would do it for you.

Re: May have damaged my barrel...Heip Please!!!

You can get a cleaning rod, patches, hand lapping paste and a jig (cal spacific). and hand lap the Powder coating out of it. It will not hurt anything. It might take a little while and wear your arms out.

NO WAY-----Lapping Compound removes metal and you have to know what you are doing!!!!!

Be careful on what you put down the barrel---well meaning people will cause you to possibly damage your bore!

You are correct; it can hurt if you don't know what you're doing. It also can make an average shooting weapon shoot much better. I have not seen anything on the market that will dissolve powder coating. I'm sure there is something that will but will it make the rifle start to pit prematurely?

The option would be send it to someone who knows how to take care of your problem, and then give the bill to the powder coating company to pay.

Re: May have damaged my barrel...Heip Please!!!

Let's just say that they handle thousands of weapons...
I haven't adressed it with the shop lead or the armourer yet, that's
coming. Thought if there was an easy way to deal with it, I'd just
take care of it.

Would also like to take time and thank all of you guy's for your wisdom, help, and advise.Never ran into anything like this, never thought I would...lol
The gun was a great shooter just looked rough.
Don't see many of the remington 30-S express around anymore.

Thanks again...

Thought I would update the progress, after 2 days of soaking, after a few shots to loosen things up of course. I then used finger cots over the muzzle and filled the bore with BG industrial grade carbon-intake cleaner.
Then alot of elbow grease with GM top engine cleaner and was very pleased with the results. Alot of the coating came out, along with what appeared to be some copper as well ?? Not so sure about that. There was dark blue mix in with the powder, as if I had used a copper remover, the powder resembled heavy fouling. Soaking now for another day or so, then we'll clean and take a look at the bore. Wanted to remove it as mildly as possible and this seems to be working great.
Thank's again....GREAT ADVISE.
